The Hacienda was the club at the middle of the Manchester Indy music scene in the late 80s/90s. So when Claudia from the Independent Manchester Beer Convention came down to brew a collaborative beer for their 2014 event with former Britpop band frontman and Weird Beard brewer Daniel Vane, it seemed an obvious choice for another music-related beer name. Hacienda is also the Spanish word for estate or plantation. With that in mind we created a saison with some dark grains for colour, hops with a big kick of orange in the flavour and aroma, and the addition of some Seville orange peel in the kettle and the fermenter.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a dark color, almost like a dark cola with some fluffy tan head. Aroma was some chocolate, with a touch of coffee. Dark toasted malts, roast character. Some light hop notes.

Clear dark brown to black beer, creamy beige head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet, lots of chocolate, cocoa powder, orange peel, bit spicy, sweet. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: little bitter, mocha, coffee, bit sweet, some banana. Aftertaste: coffee, mocha, not very bitter though, yeasty touch, hoppy finish.

Bottle from Beer Gonzo. It pours near black with a decent light tan head. The nose is rich, smooth roast, dark cocoa, earth, light coffee and Terry’s chocolate orange. The taste is bitter, rich roast, spicy, earth, orange rind, dark chocolate, light alcohol, toast and coffee with a drying finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Rather quaffable. Punchy, yet rather drinkable.

Bottle. Beer Central, Sheffield. Clear, very dark, ruby red. Thin, dense, sticky, pale tan head. Plenty of dark chocolate. Light roast. Hint of orange chocolate. Saison character at the end. Taste is muscovado sweet, turning dry, and woody bitter. Fairly full mouthfeel. Bit oily. Finishes woody dry, and slightly harsh bitter. Thought this was a BIPA, and was ready for a 3.2 rating, until I clocked it.

Bottle from Sourced Market St Pancras and drunk at home. Black beer with a thick beige head. Some roast on the aroma. Then quite like a farmhouse beer in the mouth. Not sure it totally works together. A kind of funky black beer. Some chocolate. A little orange maybe. Some hop on the finish. Bit weird but drinkable enough. Bit too weird for me.

Craft Tottenham Court Road. Keg. Opaque black beer, decent pale tan head. Palate is airy but also has a decent crisp bite from the fine minerally carbonation. Very mild dark malts, touch of dry dark malt cream. Very nicely integrated zingy orange, has a sherbet vibe. Mild floraplness and a whisper of candy fruits before a crisp finish. Nicely done, very drinkable.
