This beer is aged on new Missouri oak. The wood has a medium toast, which helps to caramelize the sugars in the oak and adds a nutty character to the beer as it soaks into the wood. Leave the corkscrew in the kitchen drawer and pop open a beer that will reward you with more flavors than most wines can dream of.

750mL bottle from 2008, split 6 ways, pours a hazy golden amber with a small beige head. Aroma of brown sugar, oak, caramel, booze, toffee and dry dark fruits. Flavour is sweet upfront with liqueur (brandy), followed by notes bourbon, toffee, wood and candied sugar. Quite complex, though slightly thin on the palate. Most excellent.

ChrisOs ’Donkey Dork Lord’ Pre-GBBF Tasting. Hmmmm! Deja Vu! Coulda swore I’ve had this before but have no record of it. Light haze on a deep amber beer. Small pale tan head. Light palate, semi dry and crispish. Dark toffee - nicely jusged - not too sweet. Lovely oak notes, vanilla. Mild caramel. All hangs together is a tasty treat of a barleywine.

Bottle 750ml. @ chriso s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2011. [ Vintage 2008 ]. Clear medium amber colour with a small, fizzy, virtually none lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is light heavy malty, caramel, fruity, coconut, dried berries, wood, licorice - lakridskonfekt notes. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20110730]

2008 bottle at chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig ’11. It pours amber with a thin foamy white head. The nose is sweet brown sugar, coconut, bitter chocolate and toffee. The taste is brown sugar, brown bread, cocount, bitter chocolate, oak, roasted malt and alcohol warmth, with a bitter finish. Enjoyable in small measures.

Bottled, thanks baggio! Clear amber, no head. Oaky caramel aroma. Sweet and full bodied with caramel and coffee drenched in oaky bouyrbon. Velvetty and thick, warming and intense. Lovely barley wine!

Had this at the RB Pgh tasting at lithy’s place 5/21/11. Courtesy of absolutesites - BIG thanks for the chance to taste this. I must caution the reader I am not a fan of barley wine nor am I qualified to rate such a finely brewed beer with my humanisitc tongue. Not a bad looking brew. From the bottle this stuff provides a somewhat perfumy barley wine aroma, reminds me and some of my cohorts of unfermented wort. First taste is big and sweet medicinal flavors, what I feel is common of BWs. On style fer sure but way too much for this lager lover. Alky burn down the back of my throat for a finish.

2008 bottle: Very oaky, toffee, and cashew nose. Dates are also quite prominent. Cloudy copper, slow building medium yellow head, decent retention. Full bodied and chewy, alcohol is quite noticeable, but not too extreme. Toffee and dates in that order of appearance. More oak on the back end. Way maltier than hoppy, but the oak supplies a third dimension. Quite drinkable despite its strength, but I would love a bit more hops please.
