Another of the barrel aged versions of Santa’s Little Helper and so far the first beer I encountered that is matured on tequila barrels. I immediately associate the presence of tequila taste in beer with horrific tequila-flavoured lagers but obviously this is something completely different: all the complexity and perfume of the original beer, but more woody, with some tannins (though softer than in the cognac version) and with a subtle spiciness indeed vaguely reminiscent of tequila. Another Mikkeller masterpiece.

Bottle at home. Pours hazy near black, little head. Aromas of booze, dark sugar, wood, tequila is there, quite fruity too. Taste has a bit more tequila, but the base beer comes through nicely. Roast bitter and faint chocolate sweet. Clean finish.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s pad big thanks to Ken, 16/01/14. Light black with a moderately appointed tan head that thins to a swirl. Nose is dark toffee fudge, chocolate, nutty, dark malts, barrel aged boozed twang. Taste comprises bitter dark chocolate notes, spice, boozey, woody tequila lick. Full bodied, fine carbonation, booze laced climax. Decent enough BA affair.

Bottle courtesy of Mr Ken. It pours darkest brown with a medium tan head. The nose is bitter-sweet, toast, roasted malt, blackcurrant, blueberry, jammy, ash and some tequila. The taste is roasted malt, toast, fruit cake, apple, pear, chocolate, vanilla and coconut with a dry, earthy finish. Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. Soft and rounded. Works rather well.

Tasting at the pad of the ever gracious Bruce. Opaque dark brown beer, good yellowish pale tan head. Smooth soft airy palate. Mild malt cream. Very mild spice. Trace of wood. Mild Tequila tang and mellow generic fruits. Light smooth finish with the Tequila turning limey. Tasty but wanted more barrel character.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to K-Bird. Ooof, lovely stuff. Lots of dark fruits in the nose, some oily coconut. Medium to big sweet flavor with more oily coconut, chocolate, minimal bitterness, chocolate cake. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Rich but balanced finish, lots of dark fruits, toffee, chocolate, coconut, vanilla. Gorgeous. Decadent but very well balanced.

375 ml. bottle sampled @ Kerstbierfestival Essen 2013. Bottled on 28/03/2013. Black with a mocha head. Nose carries some sweet Tequila, pretty light with lots of roast, boozy, mocha, lots of burned sugar, black chocolate. Touch milky upfront, bitter roast, burned herbs, warming, Tequila is only faint, dark chocolate,… Thicker grounds body, expected a bit more here even if it is not a bad brew.
