Back by popular demand, this distinctive porter utilises the same oak smoke that produces delicious kippers and bloaters at Jonas' 165 year-old smokehouse in Chapel Street, Cromer. Both the Maris Otter malt and the Centennial and Wakatu hops were suffused with the flavours of the smokehouse for three days. I have the recipe right now and it fermented to a very satisfying 5.7%. One kilderkin was dry-hopped with Mozaic which proved to be an excellent decision as it adds to the fruitiness and complexity. I would do that again.

Opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is airy and mildly crisp. Very light and mild dark malts. Tangy and a touch of coffee. Thin malt cream. Mellow smoke and dark fruits. Airy semi dry finish. A decent mellow smoky porter.

Thanks. 650 ml. bottle sampled @ “Poppyland Sucks Tasting” @ the Barely legal tasting room. All 5 Poppyland beers that we tried had notes of smoke, medicinal fare etc. I figured that they are infections and all 5 tasted awful, this one uses specifically the word smoke on the label, seems to me that they clearly know that there is something wrong with their beers. Once again this one is gluten free. Pours a reddish dark brown with an off-white head. Smells lactic, smoky, sour, grains and grounds. Tastes of soil, lots of rotting spoiled vegetables, medicinal, smoke, sour, rotting, discarded coffee grounds, ashes, lingering aftertaste of rotting vegetables, picking up more specifically also some very rotting green paprika here. Fizzy thin body of an infected beer. Worst of the 5 beers & easily one of the worst beers that I have ever tired. The fact that the bottle says that this is suitable for vegans which is cool is the only redeeming feature that I can find about this beer.

Bottle from the brewery. Clear, dark red. Thick, tight, lasting, tan coloured head. Very nearly as good looking as me. First things first.. this is a lot more black IPA, than it is smoked porter. But either way, it is very good beer. Roast malt. Hint of liquorice. Red fruit. Grapefruit. Hint of ripe pear. Taste is bitter, dry, underlying sweetness. Medium to full bodied. Dry, light bitter finish, with the smokiness making an appearance right at the end.
