Noblesse Very Special Old Pale (VSOP)

De Dochter van de Korenaar in Baarle-Hertog, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪

Belgian Style - Blonde / Pale / Amber Regular
Score
7.01
ABV: 5.5% IBU: 35 Ticks: 50
Accessible spicy blonde beer of only 5.5 vol% matured in gin barrels

This beer has matured in eight months ‘Villiers’ gin barrels and 8 months in bottle. Noblesse VSOP is thus a clear beer, and has a very fine, light bitterness of hops and juniper. The beer is refreshing, smooth and has sufficiently long aftertaste. A perfect thirst-quenching beer.

Bottle shared with Joes. Hazy yellow color, small white off-white head. Smell and taste lightly malts, lightly hops, mandarin, a touch of grapefruit and bitter. Nice easy drinkable beer with a refreshing flavor.

750 ml bottle sample. Pours a clear gold with light head. Aromas of tart fruit (juniper berries?) and apples. Flavors of green apples, citrus, and light hops. Very fresh and crisp for such long barrel aging/conditioning.

Bottle sample @ ZBF’13 shared with the RB Belgian crew. Dorée claire, col blanc crémeux. Arôme présente un léger houblonnage fruité tirant sur un fruité citronné. Le bouquet est subtile avec du genièvre qui est bien placé pour ce type de bière. Note grains et malts en retrait.

Draft? @ ZBF 2013. Pale golden with little white head. Nose is some sweet Jenever – only a small hint and only because I am looking, quite a dash of spices, sweet malts, quite sweet, white sugar, light dry hay, barn,… Zero Jenever in the taste, sweet malts, white sugar, light dry wood, dash of spices, caramel, touch herbs, sweet hay, light dry wood, barn and some green apples,… Creamy and quite dry body. Not bad but I am used to more from this brewery. Bit surprised by the lack of Jenever here but as I was old, standard old Jenever is not particularly appetizing so they used a far mellower one… After 8 months it was still far too boozy etc. they let it rest for half a year or so – now I am not really getting anything in here. Jenever is quite common here and thus there are a lot of barrels floating around much like with bourbon in the USA. Unfortunately I still don’t feel like Jenever really lends itself for aging unlike bourbon which is perfect with its charred oak vanilla notes but my feelings towards Jenever aging might stem from the fact that I am not a big fan of it.

Draught? Small head with textbook lace, golden beer. Sticky, caramelly nose, brandyaroma, bit of ureum. Sweet -incense, herbal, caramel, cornflakes - but all flavours beautifully blended. Cognac returning in the aftertaste. Slick, heating. Very nice surprise! Very Special Old Product...
