Special oak aged edition of Zuiderbierke, at Modeste, from tap. Irregular but dense and moussy, yet quickly opening, lacing, pale beige head over a cloudy burgundy beer with ruby hue. Aroma has old school spice liqueur in large quantities, hints of Antwerpian ’borstbollen’, Jägermeister and overly sweet cough syrup, vanilla, toasted bread, caramel, chocolate liqueur, honey. Sweet estery fruitiness in the mouth, blue grape, banana, pear with candi sugar poured over them, bit sticky, lean and supple caramelly maltiness with soft carbonation, tart edge leading to a more complex finish in which the cloying candi sweetness and lingering malt sweetness get the company of drying woodiness (but gently so), a deep earthy hop bitterishness without being truly bittering, and that retronasal sweet spiciness again, a tad medicinal but in itself not unpleasant. Different from what I expected, but a fascinating brew for sure, with enough layers of flavour to keep one’s attention.

Many thanks to Hertie for sharing! Smooth sourish beginning. Fresh malty beginning, sweetish-smooth with hints of too much carbonation. Sourness, round fresh fruit, nice malty, not too deep. Nice.

750 ml bottle. Gusher. Pours a very dark brown with full head. Aromas of Xmas spice, and malt extract. Flavors of alcohol, raisins, red wine vinegar, and spice. Can’t really get the oak. Maybe some green wood... Can’t say I’d buy another bottle as it’s relatively expensive at 15 Euros.

Sampled draft 15 cl. as "Z.O.A.S" @ Modeste 2013. Unspecified barrels. Dark Furniture wood brown with little tanned head. Nose is warming, akin to a French spirit on wood, vinous & viscous, maple syrup & brett, strong spirit & chestnuts. Taste is brown sugar, brett & vinous (both feel like unintentional infection during BA), light sourness, reg. malts & BE yeast, syrup, candy sugar, warming spirit character & faint wood. Thick malty & less carb. Doesn’t feel like an entirely successful BA, it is nice to see a small BE brewery branching out. I see that I rated it quite a bit higer than the base beer.

Red-brown beer with little head. Fruity, leafy, curry(leaves), but smelling sweet. Fruity, chocolate and some spice from curry - as to which? Some lemon in the finish, faint wood. Medium to well-bodied, slick. Interesting beer, the blend makes it intriguing.
