Originally brewed on October 25th to commemorate the Charge of the Light Brigade. Don’t be fooled by the strength, this is one easy drinking beer. A rich, sweet barley wine with a heady, alcoholic nose and incredibly complex flavour profile. Brewed since 1994 by appointment to the Queens Royal Lancers. They’re tough enough to sink a few….are you?

Now brewed in January and matured for 11 months to be sold over Christmas and New Year. The prolonged storage provides an extremely drinkable ale for its strength. A strong, dark aromatic and estery barley wine.

Cask @ Lamb, Stoke Goldington. Cola-coloured brown with a shade of ruby. Smell of alcohol, almost whisky-like. Sweet caramel taste with warming edges. Sweet smoky finish with a hint of bitterness. Sublime and intense.

330ml bottle from some big supermarket somewhere. Malty aroma, sickly sweet figs and liquorice coming from first sip with some warming Autumnal shades of malts, nuts, berries & raisins emerging as you journey on. Wasn’t sure I liked this at first. Now I think I do. Also it should be mentioned that this is brewed every year to commemorate the anniversary of the 1854 Charge of the Light Brigade, something Iron Maiden’s ’The Trooper’ ale is also named after. If only Iron Maiden’s attempt had as much venom and strength as this. You listening Bruce?

Bottle @ Borefts ’13 thx to Martinus. Clear copper colour with a small sized white head. Smells fruity and sweet. Tastes fruity and sweet also. Nothing crazy, but still decent. Medium body, soft fizzy carbo. They should do a collab with Mikkeller and call it ’Death or Gloryhole’.

Thx! for the sample to Martinus. 33 cl. bottle sampled @ Borefts 2013. Clear amber, white head. Smell is caramel, oxidized, brown sugar, sweet malts, toffee, nice Barley wine, sweet stuff. Taste is sweet caramel malts, good Barley wine oxidation notes, bitter herbs, sweet spices, dark fruits, toffee, brown sugar. Oily, not particularly heavy body. This is a nice regular BW, def. enjoyed it.

Sampled from bottle thanks to Martinus @ Borefts 2013. Clear orange to amber color, small white head. Smell and taste malts, some sweet-bitter, nuts. Not really outspoken. Decent. [6-2-6-2-11=2.7] -- Re-rate August 2014: Bottle shared at RBESG 2014 Grand Tasting. Rusty orangy color, small beige head. Smell and taste malts, alcohol, raisins, brown sugar. Hmm, don’t really like it.

Bottle bought from ASDA in North Watford, Herts. An amber/chestnut coloured pour with a thin off white head on top. Sweet, malty, caramel aroma. Taste is similar, sweet, malty, caramel, fig, dark fruit, slightly boozy. Reminded me of a Belgian Christmas beer. I’m not usually a fan of Tring Brewery but I really enjoyed this one. Not a fan of ASDA either but I’d be happy to go back there to stock up on this tasty barley wine.

(330ml bottle from Asda, High Wycombe) Pours a deep amber bordering on mahogany, with a thin off-white head. Mildly vinous at first, before strong malted barley and Weetabix characteristics develop. There’s a little fig sweetness too, but this is mainly about the grain. Initial sweetness is well balanced with the dusty bitterness of wheat chaff blown from a combine harvester. Works really well in a traditional kind of way and much better than I expected from Tring. Nice one.
