Originally brewed on October 25th to commemorate the Charge of the Light Brigade. Don’t be fooled by the strength, this is one easy drinking beer. A rich, sweet barley wine with a heady, alcoholic nose and incredibly complex flavour profile. Brewed since 1994 by appointment to the Queens Royal Lancers. They’re tough enough to sink a few….are you?
Now brewed in January and matured for 11 months to be sold over Christmas and New Year. The prolonged storage provides an extremely drinkable ale for its strength. A strong, dark aromatic and estery barley wine.

A barleywine…really? Bland boring and lifeless. However, it does have a decent nose of malt molasses and alcohol.Seriously undercarbonated

GBBF. Hazy amber beer. Good pale tan head. Light dry palate. Fresh lactose sweet malt. Traces of spicy bubblegum esters. Very mild citrus and red berry fruits. Finishes dry with a pinch of spice, but overall a sweet barleywine.

Gravity dispense at Ascot Racecourse Beer Festival 2012 - 06/10/12. Opaque chestnut brown with no head. Nose comprises toffee, malt, nuttiness and a little booze. Tastes of dark fruit, raisens, nuts, toffee. Full bodied with minimal carbonation with a little booze in the finish.

Cask at GBBF, 2012. Copper coloured pour with a white head. Baked apple and pear aroma. Flavours of stewed apple, yellow melon and barley sugar. Sweet finish. Not as good as I hoped.

Bottled (from Utobeer). Deep amber colour, small white head. Aroma is sweet malts, some quite hoppy notes, mild spices as well as some slight alcohol sweetness. Flavour is rather sweet malts, alcohol, some toasted notes as well as quite big on the hops. Wellbalanced and rather pleasantly balanced.

Beautiful dark amber color, bright; medium sized compact head. The aroma has caramel, slightly oxidized malts, some vegetables. Some caramel and malt flavor, again with traces of vegetables; but the lean body and moderate sweetness identify this as a Strong Ale but not as a Barley Wine; although the alcohol content is not extreme, it can be clearly perceived. Correct bitterness, the final is also a bit nutty.
Pleasant brew, with no excitement though.

330mL bottle, pours a clear dark copper / red with a small off-whie head. Aroma is more reminiscent of that of an English Strong Ale - bready caramel malts, toasted nuts, with toffee and some mild sweetness. Flavour is rich in English caramel malts, toasted hazelnuts, some brown sugar with a mild sweetness. Hard to call this a barley wine; nevertheless, solid for what it is.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW. Clear, rich, dark red-brown pour with a modest head. Plenty of dark, ripoe fruits on the nose, some caramel malts. Very sweet flavor, tons of fruit punch, cherries, grapes, berries, mild caramel and straight sugar. Medium to full in body with fine carbonation. Warming finish, lots of sugars, some ripe fruit, subtle booze, more berries. One of the better English barley wines I’ve had; I don’t like sour malts. Unrefined and slightly in-your-face, this is a decent brew.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov 2010) Dark amber colour with brief, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with citrus, caramel and dried fruit. Malty, fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, apricots, orange, caramel and a slightly spicy bitterness. More than medium body, slightly sweetish. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.

33cl bottle from Asda, Earley. Dark amber with a thin fast-fading cream head; malty aroma with obvious alcohol; rich, fruity, christmas pudding flavours, with brandy and raisins and caramel; dry finish with some burn from the alcohol and a rich syrupy texture. Very drinkable.
