A Belgian ’saison-style’ ale brewed with cocoa powder and chili pepper? Ay, Caramba! Score another first for the unpredictable brewery that was the first -- and so far the only - brewery to make ales out of dandelions and mushrooms, among other things.

75cl bottle @ Chez Sophie. Misty gold appearance, large white head. Aroma presents familiar Belgian saison esters, very distant chocolate. Taste is similarly lacking in chocolate and chilli notes of any description, the saison character fairly mild and lacklustre. Not the usual high standard we've come to expect from Fantome, I can only assume not enough of the spice / chocolate powder was thrown in. Shame.

Chocolate and something fruity on the nose, warm bitter taste but no real chilli spice, perhaps a peppery hint.

Bottle at Delirium. Blond, which was a bit of a surprise. Aroma is bit funky, maybe even a bit of citrus, hoppy bitter, bit spicy. Taste is bit sour and tart, little bit of weirdness, no chocolate in taste really, cream cheese. Strange and spritzy. But pretty nice.

Bottle, bought in Leiden. Light orange brown color. Big creamy long lasting head. Milk chocolate and grapes aroma. Spicy flavor (pepper, but also other spices). The chocolate remains largely unnoticed, probably crushed between the other flavors. Pretty well balanced compared to some other Fantome beers. Grapes aftertaste.

Keg at Six D N, Aberdeen. It pours hszy brown with a thick beige head. The aroma is tangy, funky, loads of dried fruit, raisin, sultana, cranberry, chocolate, chilli spice, estery Belgian vibes, melon, subtle pear drops and bubblegum. The taste is drying, woody, earth, bit of funk, cacoa nibs, leather, caramel / toffee a bit of warming spice, alcohol hit, toothy, dirty basement, fruit cake, raisin and sultana with some chilli warmth through the finish. Medium body and moderate + foamy carbonation. Proper bonkers stuff. Kinda of works, which is kinda weird!

On tap @Luppolo Station (Rome). Ambrata/rossastra, mediamente torbida, schiuma bianca media, discretamente persistente. Al naso note di frutta matura, esteri, leggera speziatura, cacao. In bocca è dolce all'attacco, con leggero amaro finale a bilanciare. Corpo medio, carbonazione media. Originale, non male.
