A dark, bitter stout. Roast and nut aromas with a fruity balance of hops and dark malt provide an excellent lingering finish.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Deep reddish brown with a trace of tan head; rich fruity aroma; fruity and weet, thick and chewy in the mouth with hints of raisins, plums and sour cherries; lingering, sweet, port-like, warming finish.

Black color; creamy head. Aroma of roasted malt and some malt. Good mouthfeel, good mix of caramel, malt and mild roasted malt. Nothing special, but at least well balanced.

500ml bottle bought from the brewery. I had to go to Sudbury on work, so popped into the brewery which was excellent and had a little chat. It seems incredible that I’ve never rated this. Seen it at a lot of BFs but never had it. Black beer, tan head, lovely smoky stout aroma. Choc/coffee on aroma too. Smooth and full in mouth and then charcoal and acidity on palate late, with a dry finish. It lives up to its reputation. Excellent craftwork.

Cask Black beer with a good tan head. Liquorice, slightly winey-sourish nose, a bit vinous. A flavour as walking into a Chinese toko - dried fish, exotic spices. Warming up, its even more like Chinese "Five Spices". Weird... Medium bodied at best, ending flat. The problem with cask ale is that it can vary. Even in the WHOPG. This one is not in top-shape.

Cask at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Near black. Appley nose. Sweet and roasty, lightly soapy with some grassy hops and licorice showing up in a bitter finish. Nicely rounded, but well sweet, even if it dries out towards the finish.

Half on gravity. Deep dark brown-tinged. Nice roasted aroma. Keen malty taste - nutty and biscuity. Bitterness towards the end. Medium to full bodied (The Ipswich Beer Festival 23.09.2006).
Rerated in May 2008 as Black Adder Oaked. Matured in oak barrels for Dove Street Inn, Ipswich. Half, from the tap room (gravity dispense) at the pub. Delicious bitter stout with a clear pitch black body overlaid by a film-type head. Peaty notes with roasted nuts in aroma. Oak layered flavour displaying dark chocolate and sweet caramel - almost confectionary. Dark bitter fruits on the swallow. Nice mouthfeel (04.05.2008).

Bottle: Black as a crow, creamy, stable "espresso" head; stronger, dense roast-malty, fruity (ripe berries) and coffeeish nose, hoppy aromas are also detectable; only in the beginning a slightly sweetish flavour, that becomes quickly dry and bitter, quite full bodied, velvet MF; very dry, fruity, slightly acidic finish with a coffeeish bitterness in the aftertaste. Pleasant and absolutely moreish !

(Cask at GBBF, London, 2 Aug) Colour is pitch black with a beige foamy head. Nose is malty, roasted with hints of smoke, tar and black coffee. Taste starts malty, roasted and tarry, turning into chocolate (or rather chocolate mousse) and burnt toast, leaving with a nice bitter finish. Mainly dry, but with some sweetness coming through in the middle. Smooth, medium body. Great balance, complex, but still very drinkable. Lovely!

Cask conditioned at Merton Beer Festival Fri July 7th 2006. Black in colour with barely a head, roasted notes not too disimilar to the E&S 1872 Porter also available, but different in many other ways, much smoother, more chocolatey very full flavoured and dare I say it a bit more refined than the Porter, this really was a stunner. Not the sort of beer that you would ordinarily go for on a summers evening but it was smashing, all the same I think that had I have had this in the depths of winter it may have scored higher still.
