285 yen from Seiyu Minami-Kusatsu. The nose at first is quite skunky, then when you smell it more closely it gives you grainy biscuit/graham & caramel. Medium to thin bodied the taste is ashy, grainy malt forward with very little hop presence beyond a light lemony citrus. Average to below average... Kind of bland compared to US IPAs.

Bottle from ASDA. Copper coloured, no head. Easily identifiable as a Shepherd Neame ale with a very familiar style for this brewer. Has a potent nose that is somewhat soapy in texture. Has a fair bitterness. Not too bad for a supermarket ale.

500 ml bottle from Seiyu, close to Komazawa Park. Pours clear amber, initially with a nice foamy head - but that doesn’t last at all. I was actually expecting not bitter but British IPA - but well, got to live with what we’ve got. Aroma is quite weak there are some metallic malts, some sweetness. Taste is actually much nicer than the aroma. It has a bit of citrus, nice fruitiness and slightly sweet malt backbone. Aftertaste linger on in bitterness, not too strong bitterness. Quite well balanced. Didn’t really expect too much from this one at first - but it is actually quite nice!

Bottle from Asda and drunk at home. Clear mid brown colour with a lasting beige head. Shepherd Neame yeast aroma. Toasty malt. Deep citrusy aroma. It’s a typical Sheps bottled beer. It’s an ok bitter. Fruit is pretty good. Some bitterness on the finish. OK, just a bit empty.

500ml bottle from Asda, Dunbar. Golden amber pour, thin white head that doesn’t hang around. Aromas of dried fruit and caramel, touch of biscuit. Thin, with a light bitter finish. OK as a bitter, not an IPA at all.

50cl bottle from Asda, High Wycombe. Amber with a thin white head; typical Shep aroma, dry and chalky, with perhaps a touch of citrus; some sweet fruit flavours, but otherwise it’s hard to distinguish this from Spitfire; and an orangey biscuit finish.

Deep gold with a slight white head and a touch of carbonation. Tired hops, a touch of wet cardboard, bready malts and a slightly redeeming, bitter finish. Not for me, another indifferent bottled English beer.

More like a Bitter than an IPA. Strangely I pick up some spice in the aroma, cinnamon. Otherwise lightly fruity, some digestive biscuit.
