Bottle, 0.5l. Black pour, one finger soapy beige head. Short lasting, minimal lacing on the glass. Mild nose, slightly roasty with notes of caramel. Thin body, medium to high carbonation. Prickly on the tongue, light texture. Bittersweet taste, slightly charred. Aroma of caramel, roasted malts and grains. Mild licorice. Subtle fruity notes in the background. Grainy aftertaste with some metallic notes. Short finish. Overall, a bit bland and watered down. Drinkable.

500ml bottle into pint glass. Pours a very very dark brown with a frothy tan-coloured head. Some lacing. Nose is lightly malty with a touch of caramel and dark fruit. Light body, zingy carbonation. Finish is more malt, chocolate, and dry cocoa. Nice schwarzbier, no world beater but pleasant enough.

Smell - weak, but quite nonspecific, maybe chocolate or coffee. Foam - quite carbonated at start, bit creamy, some bitter taste, short aftertaste. Taste in general - quite weak, watery, some bitterness and sweetness. /in general feels watered down, but not too bad.

F: big, bit tanned, good retention. C: dark, almost opaque. A: dark malts, bit bready, fruity sour. T: dark malts, fruity sourness, bit roasted tones, bit metallic, dry on the palate, too fruity for me, I expected more rich dark malts, light body and medium carbonation, 0,3l from tap @ Koutská piváreň in Bratislava, Slovakia.

0.3 l on tap at 'Koutská piváreň'. Very dark brown, almost black with a medium large, quite dense, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, a little roasty aroma of caramel, toasted nuts and hints of peas. Moderately sweet, malty, gently bitter, slightly roasty taste of caramel, toasted nuts and light cocoa, followed by a short, moderately bitter, slightly roasty, quite earthy-dry and a little tart finish with notes of red berries. Almost medium-bodied, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Okay, not bad.

Draught @ Malt & Mold. Opaque dark brown with creamy beige head, roasted malt aroma, high carbonation, mildly bitter, slightly tangy malt taste, smooth body, long roasted malt finish. Smooth and easy to drink.

DE-998. Dark brown with a lousy head - looks a bit like cola, though not nearly as carbonated. The malts are of the dark, sweet, sugar type, ok on their own but lacking in nuance. And hinting at a really sugary beer. On the palate, basically has that cola-malta (malzbier) character you get from large amounts of residual wort in the beer. Now, I like the taste of malt, which is why I will drink malta on occasion. But it’s a thin leg on which to stand your dark lager - you need more malt complexity, and ideally some sort of dryness. If this was made by some sort of Mediterranean macrobrewery I’d be a lot happier; Germans can do better.

Tried at the grapevine Exmouth. Almost black colour with an off white head. Aroma has dark malts treacle and s touch of smoke. Taste light smoke to bitter chocolaty malt. Rich full body.
