We brewed a dark, decadent wheatwine-style ale with chocolate wheat malt to accentuate the richness imparted through barrel-aging. We then divided the beer into three components, laying each down in new American oak barrels with varying degrees of barrel toast and char. This release showcases the caramel, chocolate, vanilla and slightly smoky notes contributed from aging in medium toasted oak barrels. Taste it side-by-side with its light toast and alligator char counterparts to bring the barrel-aging journey full circle.

Bottle shared with the RateBeer Munich Tasting Group, Tuesday 10th December 2019 at Jonas's, Garching. Pours dark chestnut with a filmy off white head, another very soft carbonation, doesn't taste as boozy, but still it's a touch boozy. Warming a little bit of stock, ok.

Bottle. Very dark with a thin head. Sweet and oaky nose, flavor trends sweet & dark syrupy with a long-lasting boozy note. Doesn't taste like booze from the barrel (as it says new barrels?) but rather from the barleywine itself. Nice darker version of the light toast version!

Bottle at tasting. Aroma of bourbon, caramel fudge, oak, chocolate, molasses and dates. Taste has caramel fudge, bourbon vanille, molasses, oak, chocolate, wheat and dates. Nice, bit more molasses and bitterness than the light toast one.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma is very similar to the light toast Arbre. The oak note is a bit more complex with a hint of smokiness and some light vanilla. It also adds a bit of a nuttiness to the malt profile. Pours a very dark brown with a medium small, thick, dark tan head that recedes steadily to the edges where it lingers for a bit. Flavor is also very similar, but more of the oak profile comes through. In particular, there is a bit of a smokiness and some light vanilla and nutty notes as well. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice experiment, but by itself the beer isn't super great. I prefer the oak in my beers to be a bit more subdued. The malt profile of the wheatwine is pretty nice though. I think I prefer this variant to the Light Toast as the oak profile is a bit more complex and works a bit better wit the malt.
