A dark and foreboding ale, London Porter is a brew of mystery and intrigue. Hidden within its shadowy depths are lurking notes of coffee, chocolate and smoke. Just like its namesake city, there is always more to discover in London Porters unlit complexity.

Bottle at home. A great pour with a good head and a strong aroma of roast and burnt malt. The taste was bitter and burnt malt that brought forward coffee and a definite bitter chocolate. The mouthfeel was thick and nicely oily which was a pleasant surprise for a porter with a 5% abv. It was also quite thirst quenching because of all those bitter malts.

Cask at the Mad Squirrel, High Wycombe. Dark brown with a large but loose tan head. Chocolate with some light smoke, earth and caramel. Exceptionally smooth, and exceptionally drinkable. Excellent stuff.

On tap at the Mad Squirrel Brewery Shop, Chesham. An attractive dark chestnut colour, almost black, with a ring of beige head; ground coffee aroma; dry in the mouth with a fruity coffee taste and a slightly lactic body; then a dry biscuit finish with some bitter chocolate.

Handpull cask at the Grain & Hop Store as Mad Squirrel London Porter. Ruby brown with a big creamy khaki head. Not completely translucent but it catches a nice glint of light. Chocolate malt aroma with caramel milkshake, chewy Hobnob, all complemented by a nice strong coffee. Sweet taste with herbal notes, turning slightly more bitter at the end of the sip. Liquorice and cherry brandy in the aftertaste. Body is too thin for my liking, especially for these kinds of beers. All in all itโ€™s a fairly cracking cask porter.
