Leighton 10K tasting at Bruce’s pad. Opaque black - brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is light and airy and a little dry. Very mild airy dark malts, touch of roast and a whisper of cream. Light piney hops with mild floral bitterness. Light finish. Not bad but needs more backbone.

Bottle at Bruce’s. It pours darkest brown with a thick tan head. The nose is rich, roasty, grapefruit, soapy, orange peel and cocoa. The taste is bitter, piney, roasty, grapefruit, soap, varnish, light caramel and dark chocolate with a dry, lingering bitter finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Pretty solid stuff.

Bottle shared during Black IPA night in London - big thanks to K-Bird. Pours clear, deep brown with a thick, frothy beige head. The aroma holds dry cocoa, burnt wood, moderate roast, earth. Light to medium sweet flavor with bitter scorched earth, baking cocoa, mild burnt meat, toasted pine. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. More earthy bitterness to finish, some bittersweet chocolate, mellow alcohol, lasting roast, charred wood. Slow starter but strong finisher. Good beer.

(Draught at ’t IJ, Amsterdam, 28 Feb 2014) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with coffee, cocoa, spruce needles and grapefruit. Malty, roasted taste with notes of chocolate, dark bread, coffee and a dry finish with a generous cocoa and resinous bitterness. More than medium body, quite dry. Tasty and well made black IPA. Very nice.

Bottle from the BierKoning, Amsterdam. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy tan head. The aroma is grassy hop and light roasted malt. The flavour is medium bitter with a lovely smooth spicy pepper grass hop malt palate and a short bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Perhaps the best beer I’ve had from ’t IJ.

On tap @ Brouwerij ’t IJ. Very dark color (light wasn’t good, so couldn’t see if it was black/opaque etc). Steady beige to light brown head, good retention & lacing. Aroma’s: resin, bay leaves/laurel, and retronasal there’s roast/coffee, chocolate. Flavor is moderate sweet, roasted, moderate bitter. Medium bodied, quite high carbonation. Finishes roasted, chocolate, coffee and eventually a nice hop-bitterness. Nice!
