Can at home, from HOTM online, 06/08/21. Deep mahogany brown with a well appointed beige head. Nose is beechwood smoke, bonfire, dried fruits, burnt toffee, dark malts. Taste comprises Frazzles, charr, smoked malts, fruit slice, campfire, roasted bite, singed brown sugars, charred pork ends. Medium bodied, fine massaging carbonation, semi drying close with a smoked cloak at the curtain call. Solid offering for the style ... good smoked effect allied to a good overall balance.

Can from Brew Cavern. It pours darkest brown with a khaki head. The aroma is rich smoked malt action, oily, sweet, sticky, meaty, umami, smoked ham, charred vibes, bonfire and cola cubes. The taste is dry, bitter, toasty, charred and smokey, good depth of smoke, burnt toast, spicy, wood smoke, bonfire, umami, some underlying, honey glazed ham, earth and leather with a lingering smoke finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Dell done.

Can from the brewery shop. Drunk with a 9pm dinner thanks to a lot of work today. Dark brown, moderate cream colored head, Bamberg smoky nose with nice malty notes. Crunchy taste, a bit lighter than another certain famous Rauch-Märzen I believe. But still a heavy contender. Clean, tasty, smoky through the whole palate. Good bitterness at the tail that lasts.

Can at home in Hackney - sourced from HOTM. Pours clear red-brown with a frothy, khaki head. Moderately sweet, really tastes like burned honey-cured ham, lots of smoke, burnt sugars, a little caramel. Medium bodied with massaging carbonation and creamy texture. Sturdy smoke in the finish, more rich meats, ham, burnt honey, bready malts. Really tasty gear.

440ml can. Slightly cloudy, dark brown colour with ruby shimmer and average to huge, frothy to creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, off-white head. Smoky, malty aroma, notes of burnt paper ashes, wood ashes, a touch of smoked ham, some caramel, whiffs of leather. Taste is slightly dry, minimally sweet, smoky and caramel malty, minimally herbal, notes of smoked ham, some juniper berry, a touch of wood ashes, toasted dark bread, nutty overtones, a cautious touch of leather; minimally diluted flavours overall. Creamy-oily and minimally watery texture, smooth and soft, slightly cloying palate, fine, soft to flat carbonation. Well balanced, Gänstaller-typical, very soft, in this case not too flat carbonation - very good!
