Can at home. Pours chestnut colour with a beige head. Nose is immense smoked malts, ham and cheese, lovely. Taste is sweetish malty, caramel and bready notes come through from beneath the smoke. Closes with a caramely, smoky, slightly metallic finish, has a medium body and soft carbonation. Not particularly complex or layered but it’s very much my cup of tea.

Tap at Fränkisches Bierfest. Opaque deep brown. Ash, roasted nuts, malt, caramel. Full front, chocolate coffee, soft. Could have more crunch.

Canned (from KSM Kampus, Pori). Amber colour with mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is smoked, some sweet malts, mild leathery tones. Flavour is smoked, some sweet malts, mild liquorice root, some burnt wooden tones with mild toffee tones. Lovely brew.

Draught @ SKAAL Sønderborg. Pours slightly hazy dark brown with shades of ruby and airy light tan head. Clear aroma of smoke, with notes of malt and touches of yeast. Distinct smoky flavour with notes of roast and malt, and touches of hops and caramel. Smoky and estery aftertaste with malty hints. A really nice one, and it would be even better if the carbonation was higher.

Dark brown with thin head and fine carbonation. Really malty and silky smooth. Pleasantly smoky. Super easy to drink.

Can from Geers. Clear dark brown, small, off-white head. Aroma of cured meat, tobacco, toast, chestnut, BBQ herbs, burnt wood. Taste has sweetish apple & fig; toasty, brown-bready maltiness with smoky, herbal & woody notes. Herbal hoppy finish, still smoky-meaty, tad salty, tobacco & dried fruit notes. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Was past its best but still very good.

Generally not a fan of smoked brews but this is reserved enough to be on fleek. Smoked roasted malts, salty ham, sweet malts, caramel. Medium bodied. I really dig this and I’m pretty sure that’s the first time I’ve said that.

Ganstaller x Sakiskiu Burned Malt Rauch marzen30 IBU 5.5% Deep reddish brown with a tan head and a medicinal, prayed malt type smokiness with iodine notes. Very smooth medium bodied brew that gives you smoke, caramel and bready grains. Really nice Smokey stuff.

Can, 0.44l. Aroma of smoked meat, leather, caramel and dried fruit. Pours cloudy dark brown color with thin creamy tan-like head, floating yeast particles and soft visible carbonation. Taste starts with medium sweet caramel and richly smoked malt, following is leathery, umami and dried fruity mouthfeel is smooth and mild spicy, while finish is average herbal bitter. Medium body, oily texture and average carbonation in palate. Smoke malt, not weed…
