Black with thin dark head. Aroma and flavour have dark malts and a little bitter coffee. Seems quite spicy. Maybe from the cinnamon.

Pours black, medium sozed yet very stable, fairly creamy mocha colored head. Scent is roasty, full has a sharp edge to it. even a remote touch of ash. Not sure what Pasteis de nata is , but I feared 'pastis' like flavors which I don't encounter in the scent. perhaps thats what's providing the 'sharp' scent ? Taste is thcik, fairly sweet of course. Roasty, chocolate. A touch of a sharp, dare I say ... mildly almond-ish flavor ? It's not straight up almond (pastis) , perhaps it's just in my brain, but than it would be at least similar. For the price you pay, this has an amazing body and complexity. granted, I don't think the adjuncts are my favorite, but appart from that this beer works very very well indeed.

5/III/21 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home, BB: 2ndQ XI/21 (2021-181)
Clear dark brown to black beer, big creamy dense irregular beige head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: dried fruits, some ripe banana, alcohol, yeasty, some dried fruits, more banana peel, some coffee. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: soft roast, quite some caramel, vanilla notes, alcohol, ashes, pretty bitter, coffee notes. Aftertaste: slightly smoky, coffee, some banana, caramel notes, bit of cocoa powder, hint of cinnamon, nice stuff, dried fruits, bit earthy.

Bottle from Geers. Cloudy black, no head. Aroma of biscuit, brownie, cinnamon, clove, chocolate nibs, vanilla, custard, coffee liqueur, orange peel, sweet tobacco. Taste has sweet fig, dates, red apple in a thick chocolatey body, biscuity too, touch of vanilla, spicy middle with cinnamon & clove & the 'mandatory' toastiness, vague lemon zest in the back. Herbal hoppy & spicy finish, creamy custard returning, lemon peel only subtle compared to the cinnamon, dark chocolate & the warming effect of liqueur. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Enjoyable, not as full as expected though.

One of BBP's newest, a pastry stout centered around a rather unlikely theme: Portuguese pastry, as produced by Forcado, a Portuguese pastry shop in Brussels. Contains lactose, vanilla, cinnamon and lemon - let's see how this plays out... Thickly mousy, regular, deep beige, membrane-lacing, dense and pillowy head, gradually diminishing but (irregularly) retaining well on a pitch black beer with only about one millimeter of ruby redness on the edge. Aroma of indeed lemon zest, freshly and elegantly hovering over a 'deeper' world of cappuccino, incense or even paraffin, melting bitter chocolate, brownies, lemon cake, clear cinnamon but less so than expected, vague remnant of vanilla in the background (drowned out by the cinnamon and - much more so - the lemon), pear juice, subtle hints of wet leather, ripe elderberries, sweetly sauced pipe tobacco, shoe polish, tequila, milk sugar and even a vague note of buttermilk, melting mocha ice cream, damp earth. Sweet, very rounded onset, creamy and unctuous thanks to the unfermented lactose, fruity hints of pear, ripe fig and red apple, softish carbonation with very full, velvety (oats!) and creamy mouthfeel; slick caramelly, biscuity maltiness underlying a thick layer of toffee and 'fondant' chocolate, sprinkled with a dash of cinnamon powder into a cinnamon rolls effect - though the cinnamon still remains somewhat restrained, overpowered by this zesty lemon peel effect retronasally. The vanilla is noticeable, but it too proves too frail to stand up agains the lemon - and remains understated to the cinnamon as well. The creamy chocolateyness, spiced with this lemon peel effect, becomes increasingly bitter in the finish, partially because of the coffeeish roastedness softly setting in, but more so from alcohol, which becomes quite wodka-like (and even a bit fusel alcohol-like) in the very end, a bit tiring and astringent even for a beer of this strength; meanwhile, though, the lactose sweetness and creaminess and the indeed pastry-like effects of the added flavourings remain the core of this beer, with said sweetness even sticking a (little) bit in the throat. A slightly leafy hop bitter note pops up as well, while the lemon, even if losing some of its refreshing powers in the end, echoes after swallowing. This is a multi-layered beer for sure, delivering the lemon and cinnamon effects while neglecting the vanilla a bit; desserty in a sense, but even in spite of the velvety oats and creamy lactose, still feeling a tad too 'thin' for a pastry stout, when compared to the standards in this style (see Omnipollo of course, but also Maltgarden and others). Especially the alcohol is a bit too present for me here, probably partially responsible for that 'thinning' effect, and bothering me with its wryness in the end (I hate it, even if I admittedly have alcohol as a hobby in a certain sense - but that is another discussion). I did, however, largely enjoy this and I generally enjoy how BBP tries out all these variations on craft beer themes, but as usual with this brewery: close, very close even in this case, but no cigar - at least not an expensive one.

Note cannelle reste également présente.
Chaleur de fin de bouche avec ces 9.3%, petite touche collante aux lèvres.
