Vibrant teamed up with Emperor’s Brewery for this big barley wine, and of course, in true Emperor’s style this was always going to be something dark and a bit special. Upfront there are big thick chewy dark malts which give a warming full bodied chocolate character and these are joined in the background by a little zingy ginger. The finish is celebrated with a moderate bitterness, some warming alcohol and a little chocolate goodness from the addition of cocoa nibs.

Nose is dark malts, fruit cake, cocoa powder, raisins, vanilla essence. Taste comprises fruit cake, toffee, spike of booze, brown sugars, dried fruits, cocoa dusting, banana notes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a rising boost offered at the curtain call. Not bad.

Bottle shared in Watford - cheers to Adi. Pours mostly clear brown with a frothy, off-white head. Medium sweet flavour, pretty thick, some booze, earth, toasted malts, mild toffee. Full bodied, chewy, with fine, massaging carbonation. Warming finish, lots of toasted malts, nips of toffee, earth. Not bad. Bit old school.

Bottle from Hoptimism. Sweet aroma, nuts, chocolate, fruit and booze throughout. Opaque very dark brown. Creamy beige head primarily sticks to the rim. First impressions are light bitter with a sour edge. Underlying dark chocolate and vanilla sweetness. Cakey. Liqourice bitterness develops and as per the aroma there's a boozy bite throughout. Medium bodied. Creamy. Flat-average carbonation. Long astringent. Enjoyable but the booze eventually takes over completely. I like a beer with warming booze but it's verging on overly astringent.

Almost clear deep amber beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Palate is relatively light and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Fair bit of treacle in the malts, lesser dark toffee too. Good ripe fruits underneath, very ripe, slightly pruney. Mild spice runs throughout. Some light esters I wouldn't normally want in a barleywine but here they are okay. Light finish. Decent stuff, but some age won't hurt.
