Death by Chocolate Cake. What would happen if we took one of the nation’s best loved, super-indulgent desserts for inspiration, and applied it to our most indulgent beer? Even more cacao nibs, even more cacao husks, even more lactose, even more wood. It’s doubled down and ramped up to imperial strength. We’ve increased the ABV slightly this year and welcome back Amburana wood. These spicy, fragrant spirals impart all kinds of flavours, not dissimilar to the complexity of tonka beans, making the beer a truly unique experience.

Can. Pours black with small head. Aroma is nutty, chocolate, caramel. Lots of underlying wood and spices. Cinnamon and cacao. Big body, smooth and luscious mouthfeel. Flavour is complex dark malts, with cacao, chocolate, some lactose, caramel and fudge, molasses, prunes. Then wood and spices. A beautiful rich imperial stout.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from Clapton Craft. Pours black-brown with a dense, cascading beige foam head. Delicious beer, lots of chocolate, coconut, toasted malts, raisins, some burnt caramel, vanilla. Medium to full bodied, lightly oily, with fine carbonation. Warming finish, lightly sticky, more luscious chocolate and coconut, soft earthy bitterness. Excellent.

Sample thanks to Cloin: Poured a pitch black with a tan to light brown head. Aroma is so cake like, lactose, chocolate, doughy. Taste is liquid goodness, chocolate, doughy, vanilla, rich roasted malts, cocao, booze is hidden although a light tingle in the finish.

Can at home, from Siren online, 25/12/20. Pitch black with a well presented khaki cap of bubbles that stays for the show. Nose is dark malts, dried fruits, mellow roast, boozey tunes, molasses, vanilla essence, cacao nibs, spice. Taste comprises dark chocolate, spice rack, cinnabuns, mellow roast, coffee bean, cacao nibs, wooded tones. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced rising boost. Solid stuff ... good roasted bite add to this the wooded effect and light herbal elements keep this one from ever becoming overly sweet.
