Another departure from our "normal service", this brew is in a very strange style which is rarely seen; Abbaye Enkel! It’s based on the beers monks drink themselves rather than the more famous ones they sell to the public; plenty of real Belgian abbey malt was added and we kept the hopping simple and old-skool to keep it as close to what Gazza reckons is within this most nebulous "style"... biscuity, malty and with a decent bitterness, this brew has enough of the Belgian bananary yeast esters but not too much to take over.

Half-pint on cask at Hopbunker. Shared with Finn. Naked at the top, minimal lacing, orange coloured body, misty. Dark fruity nose with yeast esters. Apricot, toffee and yeasty dryness to the taste profile. Mid-sweet ending. So and so. (Cardiff 03.10.2018).

Gravity poured half-pint on 18th April 2015 at the Stourbridge CAMRA Beer Festival. Strange one really: amber with a white topping. Not too sure I got anything Belgian in my glass: mixed bag of aromas and flavours with the malts just about winning in the taste race. Jury is out on this one: scored objectively.

The Fox. Cask. Hazy amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, modest and very fine and modest carbonation. Light malts. On top is mild bitterness and then pretty bitter citrus with some citric peel. Whisper of tropical fruits under the bitterness. Semi dry finish, long strong bitter linger. Not very Abbaye but nice and bitter.

Cask at the Fox - London. Pours clear amber-gold with a creamy white head. Grainy malts in the nose with notes of leaf, dried berries. Light sweet flavor with gritty bitter grain husk, more leaves, dirt, orange rind. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Abrasive grassy bitter finish with more leafy hope, earth, some grainy bread. So so.

Cask. Rutland Arms, Sheffield. Clear copper colour. Bubbly, thin, lasting, white head. Very vinous. Grainy, sweet malt. Quite grassy, green hop. Some banana in there. Light spice. Taste has sweetness. Some dry, and grassy bitter. Feels a bit thin. Finishes light bitter. Dry close. At bit at odds, really. Not for me, this one. Looks good, though.
