Can from Daily Delis, Amsterdam (presumably). Cloudy black, small, foamy, dark beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate, fudge, cappuccino, coffee cream, fig, brown bread, brandy, almond, pecan. Taste has sweet fig & pear covered in a malt body of milk chocolate, fudge, pecan & almond; slightly herbal and earthy-umami at the edges. Bitter, peppery hoppy finish, more pronounced toast & mocha, still balanced by sweetish chocolate notes, with a dash of warming brandy-like alcohol. Full body, oily texture, average carbonation. Just a classic Imperial Stout with sufficient depth to keep you entertained.

Kees Bubberman, one of the most influential standard bearers in the Dutch craft beer revolution, celebrating the sixth anniversary of his own brewery - after having raised Emelisse to the ranks of world-class craft breweries - with this imperial stout, back in 2021; I guess this means my sample is almost three years old now, but I cannot find any date on the can (maybe due to my eyesight getting older). Regularly shaped, dense, mocha-beige, small-bubbled head gradually and evenly opening from the middle, in the end dissolving all but completely; ink black robe with waferthin burgundy edge. Aroma of melting milk chocolate, cashew nuts, hazelnut paste, brown sugar, chestnut liqueur, lots of toffee and Chocotoff candy, latté macchiato, brown rum, even a hint of coconut, notes of cinnamon, blood, golden raisins, fig compote, black pepper, vague liquorice. Sweet, dense onset, concentrated fig syrup and blackberry coulis, slight umami edge (porcini) but subtly so, dim sourish undertone, not cloying; minerally effervescence, but fine-bubbled, if perhaps still a bit sharpish for an imperial stout. Thick layers of toffee-, milk chocolate- and hazelnut paste-like malts ensue, sprinkled with brown sugar but quickly shifting to a 'darker' mode with more mouth-filling bitterness, over 'fondant' chocolate to cappuccino and eventually even a touch of roasted chicory, with this blood-like, natural iron edge referencing classical stouts and eventually pushing up notes of bayleaf, cinnamon and coconut, yet all inherent to the malts themselves and not feeling 'added' (and indeed not actually used either). Finishes with a lovely balance of sweetness and bitterness, thick and hefty, bittered from underneath by dried citrus peel-like hops and in the tail by a peppery, prickling, slightly astringent rum-like booziness. As is often the case with a well-made 'impy', the booze is largely - yet not entirely - absorbed by those thick layers of black maltiness. Reminiscent of Kees' glorious days at Emelisse when the Dutch craft beer movement spectacularly kickstarted, and sympathetic in not going all pastry with odd ingredients; instead, this sixth anniversary beer sticks to its own heritage and needs no extravagant fringes to shine. A massive block of oldskool imperial stout the Kees way - which is exactly what I was hoping for. Scoring one of these anniversary beers by Kees is always a guaranteed success.

330ml can as part of a delivery from Hoptimism and drunk at home. Dark brown with a quickly dissipating tan head. Toasted malt, dark chocolate, liquorice, a touch of vanilla. Sweet taste with more liquorice and a little bit of toasted coconut. Some Gritty bitterness in the finish. Syrupy body, low carbonation. Ooh, I do like this!
