Bottle picked up from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, nr Gent, Belgie and consumed at home Attenkirchen, Friday 19th April 2019 (Good Friday). Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is a little zappy more tart berries and Brett than typical Impy Stout. Taste is similar with Brett and sharp berries overiding the big dark malt roastiness and usual chocolate touches. It's good but it's more off kilter Flemish Red than Impy Stout.

330 ml bottle, bottled 18 Oct 18. Very dark copper-brown body, with a big, frothy, dark beige, slightly reddish head. Aroma of chocolate, red wine, wood, dark fruits, slight coffee, some Brett. Tastes similar, with more leathery notes. Medium, slick mouthfeel, with an average carbonation. Finishes quite dry, warm, leathery, vinous, tannic, wooden, a bit sweet, with dark fruits, chocolate, subtle roast. Very nice, while I was expecting a bit more. The nose is really smooth, with a great balance between the vinous notes and the dark malts. Taste is a bit too much dominated by the leathery wine. Overall the character resembles more an Oud Bruin than an Imperial Stout. Maybe this will benefit from some years of age. Score: 8 / 4 / 7 / 3 / 15

New Senne ale, a collaboration with Bellwoods (a craft brewer from Canada), strong stout aged in wine barrels. Bottle from Dranken De Moor in Haasdonk (in between Antwerp and Sint-Niklaas). Medium thick, quite dense but slowly opening, greyish beige head lacing in dots over a very dark chocolate brown beer, black in general appearance, but showing its burgundy, hazy, muddy hue in the end. Aroma of blackberries, clear red wine, coffee grounds, soaking wet oak wood including a subtle vanilla touch, dry sherry, moist toast, fried mushrooms, dried prunes, dry moss and forest floor, hint of liquorish, blueberries, dry earth, salsify, walnut shells. Fruity, estery onset, lots of blackberry with pear, prune and vague cherry notes as well, sweetish with a softly ‘wine tart’ edge, softish carb, smooth mouthfeel, actually feeling a bit lighter than its ABV; pleasant walnutty, brown-bready and somewhat black-chocolatey maltiness acquiring a toasty and light coffee grounds-like bitterness in the end while the ‘dark fruity esters’ continue and the red wine effect grows stronger, together with its ‘wet wooden barrel’ character, adding some tannic dryness. Ends tart in a very soft and wine-like way, mixed with an earthy yeastiness, a herbal hop bitter accent and sherry- and rum-like alcohol effects, warming a bit but otherwise remaining very well hidden. The tart and woody effects unintentionally create a general impression more reminiscent of a strong and roasty version of ‘oud bruin’ rather than true imperial stout but I could care less: this is a rich, complex, delicious beer in which the red wine aging is as explicit as it is charming. One to revisit.
