Clear dark brown to black beer, solid creamy beige head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: pretty floral, good roast, malty, a little soapy, coffee touch, pretty nice! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter start, good roast, malty, some caramel, a little fruity, some citrus notes, floral touch. Aftertaste: good bitterness, nice roast, bitter, coffee, chocolate, hoppy.

Eher kurzer Abgang. Naja... 10/7/6/7/9/7

Bottle, 5.1%. Roasted, citric, unclean aroma. Not unpleasant, though. Almost black colour. Seems clear. Very big stable creamy rocky light brown head. The flavour is roasted and fairly dry with an acetic touch. Not as unclean as feared, but has notes of dirty kitchen rag.

33cl bottle (5.1%) from Carrefour Market Cours St. Michel in Brussels. F: slow gusher so huge, tanned, long lasting head. C: dark brown, opaque. A: malty, chocolate, bit cocoa, coffee touch, bit brett infected yet not in a bad way for me, bit dark berries. T: medium malty base, orange, coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate, bit orange, high disturbing carbonation, not very for the style yet not bad beer, enjoyed.

Caméléon in Namur attempting a Cascadian dark or 'black IPA', executed in the kettles of Manufacture Urbaine in Charleroi. Thick and moussy, membrane-lacing, yellowish beige head on a very dark chocolate brown beer, almost black indeed, but still with hazy ruby red glow when held under bright light. Aroma of burnt walnuts and burnt brown bread, black peppercorns, cold black coffee and old coffee filters, charcoal, dried wormwood, dry leather, unsugared chocolate. Dryish-fruity onset, dried blueberries and dried apple peel, very fizzy carbonation (too much for the style) but supple, bit oily body still; lots of roasty bitterness ensues, burnt toast and burnt walnuts, bitter black chocolate touch but generally very low in sweetness; ends with firm roasted bitterness of roasted chicory and old coffee filters, aided by a wormwoody, leafy, long, peppery hop bitterness - and while some spicy notes of thyme and clove develop, the hops alas fail to provide the retronasal New World aromas that almost define 'IPA' in whatever sense... Dry and focused, I certainly enjoyed it, but I would have taken it for a (admittedly hop-forward) dry stout if I had not known that BIPA was the intention; like so many other European interpretations of this difficult-to-balance style, it just isn't aromatic enough - I expect pine woods, toasted onions and fresh grapefruit peel in a black IPA but all I got here was a long, strong bitterness in the back of the mouth (which in itself is fine, of course). Nice beer, generally speaking, but IPA remains a difficult exercise in Belgium and I have to deduct a point for failing in the aromatics department.
