Rum barrel aged version in this series, consisting of exclusively barrel aged beers created by a former Alvinne employee; though earlier versions of Holy Beer House beers were indeed made at Alvinne, this “Woesten” series is brewed at Deca in, indeed, Woesten. Moussy, off-white, thin and open ‘ring’ for a head, misty caramel brown robe with ruddy bronze hue. Aroma of indeed rum, even old coconut flakes and white Bacardi, pecan nut pie, old brown honey, medlar, candied fig, wet oak wood, ripe pear, caramel. Sweet and fruity onset, ripe pear, peach, dates, with a sourish streak underneath maintaining balance; medium carb, rounded caramelly and bready maltiness with this sweetish note continuing, accentuated by the vanilla effect from the oak wood and, eventually, the coconut-like effect from the rum. The booziness, though unmistakable, stays relatively soft and pleasantly warming, while an earthy, gentle hop bitter note and ‘Belgian’ phenolic spiciness (clove) appear. Ends malty, yeasty and a bit earthy, all warmed up by sweet rum. Could have been a bit cleaner and ‘fuller’, but certainly not the worst in this series – I liked it a lot more than the ‘jenever’ versions, in any case.

11 September 2021. At Summer Belgian Beer Geek Gathering. Many thanks, Klaas & Liesbeth, cheers to the whole crew!

Clear amber-brown, thin, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of brown rum, red apple, pear, caramel, sugared peanut, wet wood. Taste has sweet pear & apple drenched in caramelly maltiness, sugary, bit nutty & herbal in the middle. Herbal hoppy finish, woody, sweet dried fruits & caramel lingering as well as boozy brown rum alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Careful sipper although it lacks body and bitterness to counter the sweetness.

Pours dark, caramel amber. Scent is full, booze, rum. Sharp, tad grainy. Taste is full, sharp, BA profile overrules the basebeer. Aromatic, tad sweet. Medium thin body. Medium high carbo. Sugary. Coconut cookies (rotskes)

Bottle @ Belgian Summer Gathering Sept' 21, Evergem. Merci Siegfried.
BB 07/11/2027, lot# 202003, lts to 560 bottles.
