Greenmantle is the ale with which Broughton Brewery was founded in 1979. Taking it’s name from the eponymous John Buchan novel. Greenmantle hero Sandy Arbuthnot, a latter day James Bond is sent to Istanbul where he becomes a legend. He is described in the final words of the novel as “one who rode like one possessed.” John Buchan spent a great deal of his childhood in the village of Broughton. We brewed this beer in honour of Mr. Buchan and crafted the Greenmantle to mimic the character of Sandy Arbuthnot.

Greenmantle is a brown bittersweet ale, with excellent licorice aromas and a smooth light hop aftertaste. Enjoy this delicious iconic pint.

Bottle shared at the 2015 edition of the chriso Pre-GBBF tasting - London. Cheers! Pours clear golden-brown with a light, creamy tan head. The nose holds old grains and plastic. Light sweet flavour, with more notes of plastic, light toffee, grains. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish, with some toasted grains and brown sugar. Eh, not great.

Cask pint in the Cafe Royal, Edinburgh on 25th Oct 2014. Golden clear body with a lasting beige/creamy head. Citrus and bitter lead in both the nose and taste with the malts giving an underlying mini-sweetness until the aftertaste, where the hops reassert themselves to give a lasting dry and bitter finish.

Fairly low on hops, and to be honest, taste

On cask at the Barony Bar. Appearance - clouds and almost murky copper with a nice fawn head. Nose - lightly spiced biscuits. Taste - more biscuits with some lime pith going through it. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a slightly astringent finish. Overall - not one of Broughton’s better ales.

Never entered a rating on this one? Ok. This is a golden-brown ale, with a malty and slightly nutty character. It’s fairly light-bodied, and is pretty much just a brown bitter. It doesn’t really benefit from pasteurization, whereas I can see there might be a little mushroomy yeast character if I had it on cask.

Half, cask ale at the magnificent Philharmonic. Low, but lasting, fawn-coloured head. Body coloured in the direction of mahogany. Earthy, brown malty nose. Nuts and caramel to the taste buds offset by resin like hops leading to a nice bittersweet finish. Likable and fine with the chicken salad (Liverpool, 09.04.2013).
