Greenmantle is the ale with which Broughton Brewery was founded in 1979. Taking it’s name from the eponymous John Buchan novel. Greenmantle hero Sandy Arbuthnot, a latter day James Bond is sent to Istanbul where he becomes a legend. He is described in the final words of the novel as “one who rode like one possessed.” John Buchan spent a great deal of his childhood in the village of Broughton. We brewed this beer in honour of Mr. Buchan and crafted the Greenmantle to mimic the character of Sandy Arbuthnot.

Greenmantle is a brown bittersweet ale, with excellent licorice aromas and a smooth light hop aftertaste. Enjoy this delicious iconic pint.

Cask at GBBF 2019. Another from MJ's 500. Deep brown-orange, clear, with lace. Much darker than expected. Nose is burnt caramel / treacle, light smoke, bread, spicy as well, like rye, herbal, peppery hops. Rich malt flavor, a bit pasty, caramel, bready, chocolate, some orange and lemon. Approaching brown ale territory, but with good hopping. How does this stand as a traditional Scottish Bitter? PRetty good, I guess. Certainly doesn't surprise or amaze, but this is still a solid dark bitter.

Cask at PoW, Aberdeen. It pours deep. Town with a small, bub my beige head. The aroma is sweet roasted malt, sticky, oily, fruit cake, cola and toffee. The dry, woody, tangy dark fruits, cola, blueberry, leather, spice, tannin, over-stewed tea, dry leaves and earth with a dry, earthy finish. Light to medium body and low carbonation. A bit disjointed. It is. Oth sweet and crazy earthy and dry. Had hoped for a bit more.

Cask pint in the Cafe Royal, Edinburgh on 25th Oct 2014. Golden clear body with a lasting beige/creamy head. Citrus and bitter lead in both the nose and taste with the malts giving an underlying mini-sweetness until the aftertaste, where the hops reassert themselves to give a lasting dry and bitter finish.

On cask at the Barony Bar. Appearance - clouds and almost murky copper with a nice fawn head. Nose - lightly spiced biscuits. Taste - more biscuits with some lime pith going through it. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a slightly astringent finish. Overall - not one of Broughton’s better ales.
