Oats are used in the brewing of Scottish Oatmeal Stout to enhance the flavour of the black malt and roasted barley which give this traditional beer its rich dark colour and strong, complex roasted malt aroma and flavour, reminiscent of coffee and chocolate. These flavours are offset by a good hop bitterness and silky aftertaste.

Robert Younger, great grandfather of the founder of Broughton Brewery would be proud of this fine stout.

500 ml bottle, bought at Vinens Verden, Odense, Denmark. Black (= very dark ruby) colour, good tan head. Pleasant aroma: chocolate, roasted barley, coffee, prunes, leather. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, faintly acidic. Mellow flavour of roasted barley / dark malts, low bitterness. Not too much going on flavourwise, does not quite live up to the expectations the aroma creates.

Cask at the Clachan, Soho. It pours darkest brown with a thick, creamy light tan head. The nose is earthy, roasty, cocoa, toasted coconut in the background and fruit cake. The taste is toasty, earth, coffee, cocoa, chocolate tea cake, mild bitterness, cake and a touch if spice with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Good body and well-rounded. Good stuff from Broughton.

Cask @ Random bar in London. A dark brown beer with brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of roasted malt and some fruit. The flavor is sweet roasted with notes of fruit and a touch of chocolate. Although, the body is quite thin.

Cask @ Scarborough Hotel, Leeds. Nicholson’s Beer Festival ale. Extremely dark but not quite black with a creamy off-white head. Very light roasted malt character although a very drinkable texture if you were after a session stout.

Cask at the Haymarket. Not retired apparently. Appearance - olive black with a lovely red chink or two. Great. Nose - chocolate biscuits. Some caramel. Taste - more toffee and chocolate with biscuit edge. Actually there’s honeycomb too. Crunchie Bar. Palate - medium bodied with a crunchy texture and a well balanced finished. Overall - best beer from Broughton in ages. Really enjoyable.

Very black stout, no head. Small roasted aroma but with minimum flavour, however it is certainly a drinkable session ale.

Opaque dark brown beer, short lived tan head. Light palate with mild carbonation. Mild dark malts with traces of coffee and chocolate. Very minerally, leading to a metallic note before the finish.
