The Pier den Drol was created on the initiative of the KBR (Royal Library of Belgium) and the Het Goudblommeke in Papier / La Fleur en Papier Doré, to celebrate the Bruegel year in Brussels in style. We did not want to make a classic witbier, but decided to make a beer close to a white, but without spices and well hopped. The old hops bring both floral notes (hawthorn flower and acacia), fruity (quince, wild strawberries), and slightly spicy (nutmeg, white pepper)

New Senne beer, a wheat beer brewed without the classic Belgian coriander and made more hoppy than is traditionally the case in a Belgian witbier, making it more akin to American style wheat ale; brewed in collaboration with a pub called Het Goudblommeke In Papier, to celebrate the famous Flemish painter Pieter Breughel, who was nicknamed ‘Pier den Drol’ and died 450 years ago. Initially towering high, very foamy, eggshell-white, plaster-lacing head, thinning slowly over a lightly hazy yellow blonde beer with olive-greenish tinge and very strong champagne-like sparkling everywhere, shifting to a cloudy, deeper ochre-ish blonde with sediment added. Aroma of Granny Smith apple, green banana, pumice, fresh lime, white bread slices, lemon zest, starfruit, withering lettuce, straw, gypsum. Crisp half-sweet ‘green’ fruity onset, unripe banana, green apple, starfruit, green melon, with spritzy carbonation and ‘dim’ sourish wheatiness with a soapy character as well; soft, bready barley malt effect too but the wheat prevails, gypsum- and lemon peel-like accents, dry and zesty hop bitter finish, spicy, with the soapiness of the wheat and the green fruit effects lingering. Pleasantly zesty but not overpowering in its hop aromatics like a true American wheat ale would be, so indeed, as brewer Yvan De Baets describes it, a ‘modernized’ version of a Belgian witbier – and with Senne’s rather purist view, unspiced. Very easily drinkable and very quenching, typical Senne approach in its dry yeastiness and earthy, noble hoppiness with a subtly modern aromatic twist – this is very well done and I’m sure Breughel would have appreciated it had it existed in his day.

Explosive carbonation in hazy pineapplejuice-coloured beer to good white head. Wheat very obvious, wheat acidity suggested in the nose, soft milky-lactic-yoghurt, but nice. Chalk, wheat, diary - sums it up nicely. Bit of bananaester, if somewhat gently sourish. Very spritzy carbonation, wheatslickness, light to medium bodied. I'm sure Breughel den Ouden would have approved.

Draft @ BIRA BIRA beer festival #1.
