Six medals already in the Camra Champion Beer of Britain awards speak volumes. So trust the experts and treat yourself. Step back in time and experience the wonderful spiciness of this fabulous porter - a taste of history still living it large in the 21st century.

Cask at JDW Shakespeare's Head, London (31/03/2023) - JDW Spring Beer Fest 2023 (28 of 30) dark sweet and roasted malty with notes of chocolate, some dark fudge and caramel sweetness, tempered ashy roast, great smooth creamy mouthfeel and body, lingering malty finish. Very nice.

Pours a dark brown colour with a small thin and foamy beige head. The aroma is roasted dark malts with chocolate and spicy notes. A moderately sweet taste, sweet dark roasted malts, coriander, sweet chocolate flavours with some dark fruit notes and a sweetish roasted finish.

Cask (gravity) at Standing Order, Derby – though I have drunk it before. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small frothy cream head. Dark fruits and roast malts in the aroma, plus some spicy hints. In the mouth it is sweet with flavours of coriander (mainly), chocolate, roasted malts and liquorice. Traces of dark fruits and aniseed as well. Sweetness remains in the finish. This is superb !

Cask. Hazy brown color with creamy beige head. Aroma is lots of exotic spices, coriander, fruity too. Taste is lots of coriander, grains of paradise, chocolate, earthy-herbal. Silky mouthfeel with low carbonation. Lots of character, lots of great exotic spices, and supremely drinkable, I love it! Extra points for character.

Pendle Beer Festival 2018. Dark ale that's not overly spicy, mainly a mild sweetness for me.

Handpull cask at the Three Horseshoes, Stapleford. Very dark brown with lilting shades of purple. A ring of khaki head. Strong herbal note with some coriander and cress. Lovely taste: milky and chocolately with a gorgeous sweet liquorice note. The coriander adds a bit of balance to what may have otherwise been an overly sweet taste. Old Growler is one of my favourite cask porters, and the herbal note adds an unexpected complexity to it.

Cask at the Cricketers (JDW), Ipswich. Pours very dark brown with a maroon tint and a lasting off white head. Aroma of black current, spice, and chocolate. Medium sweetness, light bitterness, touch of sour. Full bodied, slick texture, average carbonation. Finish is dry and slightly sharp. Not convinced it was served at its absolute prime, but still very drinkable.
