Gelbvieh (pronounced ‘Gel-Fee’) is a Franconian style Kellerbier. Brewed with our friends from Newbarns Brewery in Leith, Scotland. Expect an unfiltered and hazy gold lager with a robust bitterness and a floral, spicy hop character, dashed with notes of strawberry and fresh melon. Gelbvieh is named after a classic Bavarian cattle breed originating from the Franconian Region. Similar looking to both Simmentals and Limousins, which are found at both Newbarns Farm and in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from HOTM. Pours slightly unclear gold (late pour, clear early pour) with a creamy, pure white head. Lovely beer, lightly sweet, good bready biscuits, light grass, pale grains, cereal, nips of sugar. Light bodied with delicate, massaging carbonation. Finishes with some further balancing bitterness, grass, some floral notes, more bready biscuits, pale bread. Darn tasty.

Can from the brewery online and drunk at home. Anything calling themselves a Franconian kellerbier has a high standard to live up to. Hazy gold colour lasting white head. Bread fresh yeast malt aroma. It's not bad in fact it's pretty good. Nails the style more or less. Good drinkability. Good bitterness on the finish. White pepper finish. Decent body. Good. Just a wee bit more character maybe. but this is a great stab at a great style.

Can from Westhill Service Station. It pours hazy bright yellow - gold with a thick, fluffy white head. The aroma is fresh, fragrant, floral, daisies, spring meadow, doughy white bread, biscuit, straw, soft fruitiness and some hubba bubba chewing gum. The taste is crisp, dry, some grassy bitterness, straw, hay, honeysuckle, daisies, floury bread, biscuit, some light peppery spice and twist of citrus. Finish is dry - bitter. Medium body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Tasty stuff. Flavourful and moreish.

Can. Wine Rack, Sharrow, Sheffield. Fine haze on pale yellow gold. Decent white foam lasts and semi laces. Nose has fresh and bright malt. Crisp, grassy hop. Light, yeasty bread. Taste has some soft sweetness, and a nice balance of crisp, almost sharp, grassy bitterness. Smooth and easy drinking, with robust, foamy carbonation. Lingering bitterness on the finish. Great lager.

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - bright golden with a very slight hint of a haze. Attractive white lacing. Nose - a bit muesli-like. Grains and dried orange. Taste - more of the dried orange. Brown bread. Palate - light to medium bodied. Fairly rich in terms of mouthfeel for the style. Dry finish if not quite crisp. Overall - interesting. And not bad.
