hink legendary. This distinct ruby beer’s sweet caramel and fruity aromas tease the taste buds. Brewed with smooth and rich chocolate and crystal malts and a blend of Fuggles and Styrian Golding hops. Expect a delicious full-bodied toffee flavour and a fruity finish of figs, raisins and dates. Drink legendary.

Cask @ Bankers Draft, Bedford. Clear, mid- to dark brown with a reddish tinge, lovely thin off-white head. Malty caramel aroma with hints of hazelnuts, cola, redcurrant. Some astringency. Taste is initially sweet, with sulphury bitter notes in the finish. Bitter and almost slightly salty aftertaste. Good overall but unbalanced. I should stress that this rating is for a pint served im very good condition, a luxury many drinkers not be afforded with a national brand product such as this.

Appearance - very dark, ruby, beige head leaving plenty of lacing. Aroma- malty, a bit of fruit. Taste- smooth, medium bodied, malts, slight roast, dark fruit hints. Not as complex as the bottled version.

Cask at the Green Lion, Malmo. Poured a clear dark amber with a thin white head. The aroma is light hop fruit. The flavour is medium bitter with a rich fruit malt light hop bitter palate and a short bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Served a little cool but that didn’t do it much harm. Better in the cask than the bottle!

On tap @ Ryries. Amber in colour with a decent head. Biscuits and dried fruit on the nose. More biscuits plus some toffee and more dried fruit on the taste - a little bit of astringent maltiness on the finish, which spoils the end result. The palate as already mentioned is quite astringent on the finish but there is a decent structure and texture to this beer. Overall, solid but didn’t have another - preferred the bottled version in fact.

Cask at The Old Hand & Diamond, Coedway on the England/Wales border. Ok, bit more taste than the pint before this but on the whole, medium malts, medium roast, medium fruits, medium taste, generally a mediocre beer.

Bierbörse Karlsruhe 2013 (Germany). Pours nice and dark reddish. Pleasant clean taste with a slight bitter twang and a nice kind of sherbert finish.

Hand-pulled pint in The Boat, Jackfield on 24 Aug 2013. Another one of those beers you’re sure you’ve rated, but it was bottled. Anyway I’ve set the records right by having this once again in cask form. Looks moody, dark amber, ruby brown in colour, with an inch high off-white, cream coloured head, which stayed throughout the pint, although it was a lot thinner by the end. Sweet and malty, with a hint of dark berries. A little sweet, but to my taste buds, about right. Malty aftertaste which stays until the next mouthful. Fairly thick, it hangs around for a time.
