Mortis Vitis is all about the grapes. On Halloween last year we brewed a one-off raisin and oatmeal stout. It was only going to be a one off; however, we absolutely loved it and thought the only way to improve it would be to age it in red wine barrels - so that’s exactly what we did. As we expected, the red wine and oak flavours that it’s picked up throughout the ageing process compliment this beer making it a very drinkable fruity stout.
Barrel aged for 6 months. Unfined, unfiltered, unpasteurised natural beer.

330ml bottle. Poured a clear dark brown colour, with a mostly lasting frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, boozy alcohol, red berry fruits, raisins. The flavour is moderate sweet, with a roasty, light liqourice, dry oaky, vinous, fruity, warm alcohol bitter palate. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle ordered direct from the brewery. Very dark brown, close to impenetrable, with a small ring of brown head. Aroma... oof. The red wine hits me hard. A touch of stone fruit, but mostly wine. Taste is similar, but it's certainly tempered by the sweetness of the oats. Sweet with an intense tannic finish complemented by the intensity of the Green Bullet hops. Thick oily body, low carbonation. I like it, but it's one of those barrel-aged beers where the barrel takes over the character.

Opaque dark brown beer, decent tan head. Palate is thin for the style and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Thin feeling but fairly smooth dark malts, a modest amount of unsweet dark chocolate. Some dry and mildly bitter wood underneath. Smooth and mellow red wine but very much on the back foot. I get some raisin on the smooth and semi dry finish. Would I know it was there if I hadn’t read the label - hmm! A decent RIS but a bit thin bodied. For me an RIS needs to have a rich mouthfeel and pack a little more muscle.

Bottle shared in London - cheers to Tipple. Pours clear black-brown with a bubbly tan head. Lots of dry burnt wood, bitter cocoa, ashy roast. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish, more dry ashy bitterness, baking cocoa. Not bad.
