50cl bottle from Lidl, Crowthorne for 99p. A bright golden amber pour with a cream head; malty aroma with a trace of Shep yeast; malty orange taste with a little spice; and a clean finish. Rather better than I was expecting.

Bottle from Lidl, Sowerby Bridge. Copper with a thin head. There’s some small grainy pale malts in its aroma and taste which are more stated in the former. It has a fairly crisp drinkable texture with a low to medium bitterness.

500ml bottle from aldi. Pours clear copper, thick off-white head. Aromas are light lemon and toffee, some metallic notes. Taste is more of the same, watery and thin. Bitter finish, but lacks body.

Clear 500ml bottle (3.8%ABV): poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 21 Mar 2013. As the name suggests and the clear bottle shows, this is an amber coloured beer: a white appeared initially but it soon fell away to a wisp and collar. Fairly sweet nose with malts and spicy hops vieing for position. The taste is also a battle between the hops and malts with the malts just about winning: the hops however do give a dry and bitter finish to each sip. This OK rather than good: I think it came from the Lidl supermarket chain, so it didn’t cost much. Might also be the reason it was slightly watery in the mouthfeel.

500ml bottle bought at Lidl Folkestone. That it has come to this. Having to go to a Lidl outside of Ashford to find a beer brewed just 12 miles away. Filtered and pasteurised beer. Even pouring it I can smell the candy sugar sweet pasteurised to death malt. Sheesh, you’da thought these guys woulda learnt. Yes it’s a clear, copper amber colour with a thin off white head. Aroma of boiled sweets and bitter hop and some toffee. In the mouth there is some Sheps yeast and some nuttiness to the malts. These are the best things about this beer. But then this disappointing empty vacuous boiled to nothing malt, candy sugar nothingness that makes me look into the void of my beer drinking soul and cries "Jeepers." If I wasn’t watching Marisa Tourme, I think I might not have survived this. Wow, she really is exquisite in that skin tight outfit. She is everything this beer isn’t i.e. perfect, delectable and utterly gorgeous. Sheps, do what you are best at. Cask conditioned small batch well made good quality beers.
