Cask at the Duke of Wellington, Norwich, 20/11/16. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a decent tan head. Nose is sweet malt, toffee, brown sugar, light cocoa, overly sweet. Taste comprises light roasted notes, chocolate, toffee, sweet malts, biscuit. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close. So so porter ... overly sweet and lacking balance.

Gravity cask at the Drayman’s Son, Ely. Dark brown but still translucent. Tiny bit of head. Light malty aroma with suggestions of coffee and vanilla. Gorgeous sweet taste, rich and warming. Slight sourness in the balanced finish. Dark chocolate, orange peel and more coffee. Very good.

5.0% on my brown 500ml bottle and it isn’t bottle conditioned either, so this may well be a different beer. Poured into a pint sleeved glass. Looks good, a clear but dark ruby body with a biege come ligth brown head. Heavy chocolate malts dominate the aroma, the label claims cloves are used, but I couldn’t find them in the nose or the taste. Not sure where the ’Rich’ bit of the beers name comes into play, but this is a pleasant tasting porter without pushing any bounderies to the extreme. The malty flavours do stay in the mouth, but this is far from ’rich’, it isn’t poor, more ’middle class’ in the mouthfeel stakes. Bottled porters can be a little bland IMHO, this isn’t bland, but there is something missing to make it a great beer.

Cask gravity at White Cliffs BF 2010. Deep ruby colour, thin beige head. Malty dryish malt aroma. Pretty decent ruby mild/prter. Good fruits, bit of date and walmut fruit. Some good digestive biscuit even. Quite biscuity rather than a fruity juicy porter.

3rd January 2009. Bottle BBE October 08. Clear dark brown beer. Frothy tan head. Tangy porter with a good level of carbonation. No roastiness. More of an ale than a porter. Dry palate. Drinkable.
