The ‘Alphonso’ mango is one of the highest quality and freshest varieties of the mango family. With a rich and creamy texture, it really sits apart from the rest. As will this New England IPA. A tropical twist on a classic NEIPA base with sweet mango pushing through the hoppy flavour profile.

Can from Sainsbury's Supermarket, Salford. Orange-yellow fruit juice appearance. The mango in here is light tasting, but there's enough, with its citrus elements providing an almost spicy kick to the bitterness produced from it.

440ml can from Sainsbury's - Cloudy orange body, thin white head. Nose big on the mango, taste quite unripe mango and a bit of citrus on the way out. Nice enough effort.

Murky golden beer, white head fizzes down to a thick film. Strong aroma of hops and mango. Flavour has mango, bittersweet citrus, grassy hop, just a hint of spice of some sort. Nice, airy and hoppy finish. Pretty decent but I wouldn't have minded if they'd leaned into the mango even more.

Keg from Mad Squirrel, Wycombe. From the description I expected something juicy and tropical and barely recognisable as beer. But no... the Squirrels have bucked the trend and produced a fruit IPA that is actually still recognisably an IPA. It's still murky as hell mind; a kind of grubby orangey-yellow colour with a thin white head. The mango is quite restrained, giving a sweet tropical background flavour rather than in-your-face fruit. This allows the hops to shine through, which is great because the hops are fabulous. Really fresh floral and cut-grass-after-rain flavours sing out, with notes of pine coming through too. You don't expect those hops to go with the mango, but it's just so well balanced that it works. There's a little sweetness, some dryness and a very mild bitterness, but they all play second fiddle to the wonderful fresh, happy lively hops. The mango comes through more in the aftertaste; by then it feels like a fruity palette cleanser after a zingy salad. All in all it's just a great IPA. Thoroughly enjoyed it; nice one Squirrels!
