This is our homage to a rauchbier from Bamberg in Franconia, with the smoky flavour coming from the drying of the malt over a beechwood fire. We use a blend of four different kinds of malt and add noble german hops in the boil, fermenting it with our house lager yeast, and cold-conditioning it for 45 days. The end result is a satisfyingly rich but very drinkable deep amber beer that’s perfect for the colder autumn evenings. It also makes a great match for a traditional Sunday roast!

Pint at The Independent in Brighton. Amber color, creamy off white head. Nutty and malty nose, smoked almond, a little metal. Flavor is sweet with malt and caramel, smoked almonds, some earth notes, sausage. Creamy finish. Delightful.

330ml bottle from Baccanalia, Cambridge. Supped watching a French documentary on the DGSE. Pours a hazed deep amber, off-white head. Welcoming smoked malt aroma. Flavour profile presents a nicely balanced smoky character, good smoked malt presence, gentle caramel with firewood, barrel, mild smoked pork. Not as intense as some, but all the better for it. Excellent drinkability.

Keg at London Craft Beer Festival 2023. Glowing hazy orange with a lacy head. Light smoke, ham, salmon, caramel. Nice smoky flavor. Less than Bamberg level. Woody, caramel, bacon. Good stuff.

Draft @ Tilquin English Beer Festival '23.

18/3/2022. Bottle from Hoptimism. Train beer on the way to a day out in Northampton. Pours clear dark amber brown with a small creamy off-white head. Aroma is smoky, meaty, wood-chip, malt, bonfire. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium body, oily, quite fizzy. Good, though not really a style I relish.
