Whilst we don't venture over to the dark side very often, we like to think we're distinctly old school in our approach to the stout game. Eschewing the crazy adjuncts, we've approached our latest trip to stout town with a very much back to basics attitude. Anemoia, a term to describe a nostalgia for a time you've never experienced, has us honouring the robust dark beers of yesteryear that forged our formative drinking years. Letting the malt bill do the talking here with zero dry-hops, we've brought Roasted Barley, Dark Crystal, Chocolate and Brown malts to impart a whole host of rich coffee, dark chocolate and molasses to compliment just a whisper of bitterness thanks to our use of Centennial in the whirlpool.

440ml can bought at the Offie, Leicester and drunk at home. Incredibly dark brown, completely opaque, a ring of khaki head and lots of lacing. Roasted malts are overlaid with sharp piney hops in the aroma. Bittersweet taste with chocolate to the fore and a fairly extreme hoppy bitterness in the long finish. Syrupy body, carbonation on the low side. Quite something.

On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours almost black with minimal cream head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly malts but with various spicy hints. In the mouth chocolate hits the taste buds first, followed by roasted malts and dried fruits. Hints of coffee and general bitterness come later. Quite nice, but not a world beater.

Panda 🐼 at home thanks to Colin. A dark black brown coloured pour with a lasting light tan head. Aroma is nice, sticky pine, sap, diesel, singed pine, ashy roast. Black ipa vibes. Flavour is composed of earthy roast, farmyard, spicy pine, light ash, singed. Palate is semi sweet, hishish carbonation, Nice.

440ml can Sophie's Beer Store. Pours pitch black, beige head. Roasted malt appearing in the aroma. Taste builds on this with bitter high cocoa dark chocolate, mild espresso, subtle Centennial in the background. Nicely presented, medium bodied stout. Very enjoyable.
