22 oz. bottle with black wax top thanks to BOLTZ7555, thanks for the chance Jason! Finally getting around to this as my cellar is thinning out. The label reads best AFTER 06/15/2012. The aroma show a lot. Milk chocolate malt on top of dark fruit, day old, cold coffee and a hint of citrus zest trying to peak through, interesting.
Flavor is rich and bold. Roasted malts, day old coffee with cream, light fruit hints with a very subtle bourbon toward the back end of the sip. Light sugar through out. I’m glad the bourbon is still in the flavor cause I can’t really tell from the nose it was here. Carbonation is on the low side but mouthfeel still is full and creamy. Some lingering sweet bourbon and roast notes after the sip. Nice brew but if your holding bottles I would say drink or trade right now.

Sweet and chocolaty (semi sweet dark chocolate, that is), black with tiny beige head on tap at Payette’s Black Friday event. Lingering sweetness somewhat masks the the roast grain backbone of this beauty, slick and smooth with a slight afterglow. Perfect for a chilly evening.

Bottle courtesy of rlgk. Pours dark blackish brown with a frothy and slightly bubbly dark mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and fruity with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, orange zest, vanilla fudge, peppery wood, coffee, biscuits, alcohol and moist soil. Taste is tiny sweet, tiny bitter, tiny sour and tiny fruity with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, orange zest, bitter chocolate, vanilla fudge, toffee, bourbon , biscuits and caramel. Mouthfeel is round, tiny roasted astringent, tiny creamy and medium to full bodied. Finish is bitter and fruity with roasted malts, orange zest, bitter chocolate, vanilla fudge, biscuits and hints of bourbon.

Aroma is fairly toasty with some chocolate notes as well. Light, sweet orange accents and some light bourbon character. Surprisingly has a low earthy hop aroma. More chocolate as it warms and less hops. Hints of caramel and toffee as it warms as well. Pours a very dark brown but it isn’t quite black with a thick dark tan/light mocha head that slowly but steadily thins and recedes. Medium lacing and moderate legs. A slight head lingers on the edges with some film in the center. Flavor is fairly sweet and instantly dominated by chocolate. Moderate orange character hits mid palate with a light, complimentary bourbon note. Roast is lighter than in the aroma and I do not pick up any hop flavor. Medium light bitterness and moderate alcohol spice in the finish. The flavor is similar to eating a chocolate orange while sipping on bourbon, but chocolate lingers more. Lots of lingering bitter chocolate as it warms. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. Very low astringency and moderate alcohol warmth. Overall a really nice big porter. The chocolate really comes through but the bourbon and orange kind of hide the natural ester notes that I would expect to find in a porter. This has aged well and I am happy to report that I did not lose a finger while removing the wax.

Thanks to Beer Savant for sharing a bottle during his 50th birthday bash. Black pour with a medium thick foamy khaki head that recedes slowly. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of chocolate, malt and coffee. Full-bodied with flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and a bit of fruit. The finish is roasty with a malt and raisin aftertaste. Good beer all around.
