Grand Cru started out as The Sultan. When we made this beer last year I filled 8 old Pinot Noir barrels and more or less forgot about it. To further enhance the funky character, I blended it with 2 barrels of a Flanders Red kinda thing, that has also been fermenting funky for about 18 months.

33 cl bottle. Pours hazy brown to amber with an off white head. Aroma is bretty, citric and berry fruity. Smooth wineous and light citric flavoured. Earthy to wooden, sweet and citric. Mellow berry fruity too. Nice lingering mild acidic finish.

Bottled, small sample. Dark copper color, short head. Aroma of grapes, red wine, caramel, raisin, some oak. Not much funky character yet. Quite sweet taste, bit vinous, some alcohol. Reminded me of a La Trappe Quadrupel like beer, oak aged on red wine barrels. Could have used a bit more vanilla-esque sweetness.

Bottled. An unclear amber beer with a tan head. The aroma has notes of brettanomyces, berries, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of berries, alcohol, malt, and a bit of brett, leading to a dry finish.

Very fine & dense dark cream head over fully hazy red-amber beer. Lactic acid and (dark red) fruit explosion; old wood & freshly filled (wine)barrels. Touch of young green herbs (cilandre?), old preserved cherries. Superb nose! Sourish-sweet with a marked dry-woody finish. Woodstainer, dried red fruit as cherries, and a character as from dry fortified wine. In the finish, the sweetness has an unmistakeable sultanas-on-alcohol streak. Quite well-bodied; slick to viscous; feels more carbonated than it looks. Another one that hides its alcohol quite succesfully. Strong Oud Bruin from New Hobbitland? Where is this world going to? Whatever, this is more than worthwile to search for.

Bottle shared at Josh’s Farewell Hoorah - big thanks to Paulo for this Kiwi Whale, 20/02/14. Murky dark amber with a moderate light beige covering. Nose is tangy dark fruits, bitter orange, apricot jam, earthy, light brett, toffee, lightly musty BA booze effect. Taste comprises orange marmalade, nutty twang, caramelised sugars, wine BA effect, musty wood, bitter orange, funky. Medium + bodiment, fine carbonation, sweet tangy close. Nice stuff, fair complex offering, lots going down !

Bottle shared in London to say goodbye to Josh. Thanks to Paul for this one. Pours hazy, golden-brown with a mild, tan cream head. Some floaties. The nose has lightly tangy, ripe fruits, berries, a bit of wood, hints of caramel. Medium sweet flavor, plenty of woody dryness, light earth, dried and lightly leathery fruits, dates. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with dry wood, light grass, toasted pine, more leathery and lightly tart fruits, berries. Lingering wood. Quite tannic. Not bad.

Bottle thanks to myself to celebrate kicking Josh out of the country. It pours deep mahogany brown with a small beige head. The nose is earthy, musty, funk, vinous, jammy berry, wood and must. The taste is earthy brett, jammy fruits, blueberry, juniper, grape skin, light spice, sherbet edge, warming alcohol and wood with a long, woody finish. Medium-full and moderate carbonation. Interesting and good depth to it. Nice work.
