Ok.

Bottle from Willems Grobbendonk. Color: Hazy golden to orange amber, frothy white head. Aroma: Hoppy, some citrus fruit. Taste: Hoppy, quite a lot of citrus and tropical fruit. (Tangerine, pineapple but also some subtle orange and mango) Caramel hints. Combined with a very dry mouthfeel and spicy hints of the Kveik yeast. Dry hoppy finish. Moderate bitter and sweet. Medium body, just below average carbonation. Nice one, the Kveik yeast adds an extra dimension compared with a 'standard' (whatever it is...) DIPA.

Bottle from Geers. Hazy golden, stable, frothy, white head. Aroma of pink grapefruit, pomelo, blood orange, mandarin peel, lychee, honey, artisan jam. Taste has sweetish pineapple & lychee, bitter citrus peels and sourish citrus zest over a biscuity malt base. Piney & grapefruity hoppy finish, lingering citrus zest, not too bitter. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Underwhelming all in all.

Musketeers do it again ! Man I do have a weak spot for this brewery. Great people, often great beers, original marketing.... Yet so, so often they do not name their beer (more specific, IPA sub's) style correctly. This one is called a DIPA, whilst 7.2 litterally is a 'regular' IPA. Yes, It might be insignificant details to whoever reads this, I realize that. It just strikes me with wonder why you would take the extra effort to specify it further down ( from the more generic IPA) to something it aint. Anyway, most people won't care I'm sure, it's just not providing me great trust with this company to get what I buy, honestly. Just take a look at their NEIPA backcatalogue... This one pours a hazed amberblonde, with a semi-large white head. Scent is full, orange, bit sweet impressions, reminding a bit of their classic 'Magma' tbh. Taste is surprisingly bitter, to my great liking. Just a tad metallic, perhaps? has a harp edge to it. Hoparoma is fairly mild, but surely acceptable. Has some body to it - at least it's got that to save it from the non-DIPA technical stuff. Shame for the sharp, metallic-like part, which does bring the beer down a lot compared to what it could and should have been. The KVEIK isn't too spicy / herbal as it can sometimes be, and the CRYO isn't giving as much aroma as expected. But the bitterness is pleasant! The totallity seems to be a bit acidic (not sour, not infected!) perhaps due to the brewing water being relatively low in PH? Mixed feelings about this one.

I have been following Musketeers (almost) since their beginnings and they managed to excite me on many occasions in the past, however since they built their own state-of-the-art brewery in ‘my’ old Waasland, they seem to deliberately try and reach a bigger audience, which has resulted in far less exciting beers; this is one from the Bucket List series and since it was announced as a double IPA, I was hoping to find back a glimpse of the old glory that was Troubadour Magma and its offspring. Snow white, rocky, plaster-like lacing, thick, irregularly edged head, misty ochre-tinged apricot blonde robe. Aroma of cooked sweet potato, dried orange zest, rosemary, cooked carrot, old grapefruit peel, cold French fries, clove, green mango in the background. Fruity onset, mildly estery with notes of peach, banana peel and red apple, medium carbonated with quite full, rounded body; soggy white-bready malt core with thin caramelly edges, some residual sweetness on top as well as clove-like phenols; the hops show up rather late at the party especially for this genre, entering a grapefruity, grassy bitterness and a dash of unripe mango and orange pith aroma, without stealing the show the way I was hoping they would. Lingering bready malts and green-fruity esters at the back, alcohol remains well hidden. Enjoyable for what it is, but the kveik effects are a bit understated and as a whole, this DIPA is far removed from the power, glory and vibrant colours Troubadour Magma and its older special editions had – there goes my last hope that this brewery will ever be as good again as it was when it was still a ‘bierfirma’. Too bad.

5/VI/22 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ Akke’s place, BB: 22/II/25 (2022-665)

Clear orange beer, big creamy off-white head, pretty stable, rocky, a bit irregular, slightly adhesive. Aroma: nice, lots of tropical fruits, dank hops, a bit cheesy, oxidized. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of citrus, bitter, a bit resinous, cheesy, some orange peel. Aftertaste: fruity, a bit medicinal, bitter, hoppy, resinous. Not great, but ok-ish. A bit disappointing though, I’ve had much better IPA’s from the Musketeers...
