4.3-4.8% abv. Malted barley, oats. The equivalent to Table Beer in our range of stouts and porters. Not brewed to 'dry stout'-style, per se, but a stout that is dry. Light-bodied but not thin, with more prominent kettle-hopping and then dry-hopping to add some brightness and contrast to the roasty, biscuity, and savoury character of the dark malts.

Black beer, cream head. Hoppy zesty aroma but with a good toasty malt in there too. Flavour follows suit. Toasty malt up front, some citrus hops and grapefruit, grassy, malty finish. Kernel are really good at these.

Bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours jet black with a thick and sturdy light tan head. The aroma is fresh and fruity, tangy citrus, grapefruit & blood orange, perfumed, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, toasted pine and some rocky road. The taste is firmly dry, charred, umami, pleasing big old hit of bitterness which lingers, dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted pine, waxy citrus peel, grapefruit charred wood and a touch of peppery spice with a drying finish. Medium body and moderate, massaging carbonation. Spot on. Flavourful, balanced and great mouth feel. Exceptional.

On tap at The Made Inn Ashford, black beer lasting tan head. yep another very good dry stout. hop presence is there but not overly dominant. gives a light passion fruit flavour whoch goes well with thd dark chocolate flavour. decent.

Brune foncée, quasi noire, col épais crémeux tenace café au lait.
Arôme est léger sur de fines effluves de grillé, torréfié avec une once de biscuité-Graham crackers/céréales, drêche/oatmeal cereal bowl, léger cara chocolaté, effluves anglaises - parfum houblonné se dégage avec un léger raisin voire pointe de feuillu vert frais mais le côté malté reste plus dominant.
Palais est tout comme au nez versant presque dans une offre black IPA anglaise – le tout est succulent, bien grillé, torréfiée, légère note de café, malté anglais – houblonné fin apportant des notes d’agrumes et léger raisin blanc et groseille à maquereau. Amertume qui se marie bien à la base malt - cette dernière est sèche marquée en fin de bouche.

One of countless variants of The Kernel’s dry stout, this one hopped with Nelson Sauvin. Bottle at Bar Beenhouwer. Thick, frothy, moussy, mocha-beige, stable head, black robe with burgundy edges. Aroma of old black chocolate bars, moldy walnut shells and even humus or topsoil, brown bread crust, black pepper, dry marijuana, tea, bayleaf, beef stock powder, damp tree leaves – but hardly any of the grape-like connotations usually connected to Nelson Sauvin. Restrainedly sweet but ‘full’ onset, dense died dark fruits, light sourish edge, prickly carbonation; remaining generally dry, with smooth brown-bready, toasted-nutty and eventually more coffeeish malt bitterness, adding musty features of topsoil again which may or may not be related to the selected hop variety; does end very hoppy for sure, but in an earthy, leafy way, lacking a bit in fruity aromatics for what it intends to be – but then, more aromatics could have easily tilted this beer right into black IPA territory, whereas now I still had the feeling of drinking an old school dry stout. I do not really see the point of using Nelson Sauvin here, but there is no denying that this was as solid a stout as I had anywhere, ever. Kernel at its best for me - I am even going to ignore the slight overcarbonation in my rating.

Clear dark brown to black beer, small creamy beige head, pretty stable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: nice, very malty, grains, hay, cow fodder, very rural, decent stuff! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: nice roast, very bitter, hoppy, dry, lovely. Aftertaste: good roast, very bitter, dry finish, lovely stuff.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from E5 Bakehouse. Pours deep brown with a brave, creamy mocha head - beer can’t really look any better than this. Light sweet flavour with restrained toasted malts, some cocoa, burnt pine, grapefruit, earth. Light bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Well balanced finish, modest ashy roast, bitter cocoa, nips of grapefruit, pine, tangerine. Outstanding.
