Keg at the Reservoir - Waterbury, VT. Pours deep brown with a tan cream head. The nose holds light toast, burnt nuts. Moderately sweet with decent roasty malt character, some earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes with earthy bitterness, light cocoa. Good stuff overall.

At a tasting, thanks, small stable light brown bubbly head that turns creamy, cloudy deep brown color, aroma of coffee, wood and dark bread, dominant roasted coffee flavor with some dark bread. Nice and easy to drink, fun.

Can sample at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks Stas & Max. Brown with a beige head. Aroma of nuts, maple, a bit of chocolate, mild roast. Sweet flavor with nuts, maple, a bit of caramel, light roast. Medium-bodied. Decent, more like a Brown Ale.

Tap. Pours hazy chestnut, medium tan creamy head, great lacing. Aroma is roasty, cocoa, maple. Flavor is medium sweet, light plus bitter, maple is present but not strong. Light acidity. Lightish body.

16oz can pours a watery, deep brown with some frothy, off white head. Nose is mild, light grist, a little couch, some brown sugar, some birch, a little candy. No coffee at all. Flavor has root beer and cream soda, some definite birch notes, almost herbal in a way, brown sugar, malt. Dry finish, a bit chalky. No maple. No coffee. Big miss.

16oz can (refrigerated), canned 11/2/15, drunk 12/4/15.
Dark beige head is large, frothy and fairly quickly recedes to cover atop a clear, dark amber body.
Smells like old, rancid coffee. Beany, dirty, incredibly earthy and with nothing particularly alluring/enjoyable. Questionable fermentation on the maple and honey? I don’t know, but they certainly did not do the coffee right either, as this stuff is a month old and has been refrigerated and smells terrible.
The flavor, thankfully, isn’t as offensive, with very little of the beany notes from the nose. Softer light roast coffee notes combine with base malt sugars, sticky honey and other mild roasted notes. Perhaps some maple-like flavors, though it’s hard to really pinpoint the origin of the sugars here. Heavily fizzy, loose carbonation and no real maltiness leading to a thin, watery texture. After the massively buttery pint of Valor I had prior to this, I’m seriously questioning trying anything more from this brewery.

16oz can from Julio’s Dark brown with faint garnet at the edges, lightly bubbled creamy off white head on top. Decent maple nose. Caramel and light roast and coffee with hints of earth round out the aroma. Sweet brown sugary perhaps maple flavor with bits of coffee, roast, and earth. Creamy silky mouthfeel. Decent enough beer, but really has no wow factor. The maple is subtle, but if it weren’t there probably isn’t enough body or roast for it anyhow.

Bottom of the can stamped 12/16/14. Woeee, a little old, whaddaya think?
Well, after smelling and tasting this, I thought to myself, huh, well it smells fine and tastes pretty good, let’s do the rest of this.
This ended up being poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a nice looking black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated somewhat immediately.
The smell had a wonderful blend of sweet maple to subtle roasty coffee and cocoa powder.
The taste was mainly sweet with a nice subtle roast to slight bitter underneath. There’s a lingering bitter to roasty sweet maple aftertaste leading to a sweet sticky finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a nice sessionable feel to it. I might have had this a bit old as I’m thinking it may have smoothed all the way out.
Overall, though a bit old, I think this has a ton of potential of being a top notch American Stout. I can’t wait to try fresh this Autumn/Winter when it comes out again!
