Gnommegang - Belgian-Style Blonde Ale

A little magic and a lot of mischief. This time the gnomes brought more than just yeast from their Belgian farmstead Brasserie d'Achouffe! While Coop and the gnomes were spicing things up at the brewery, our brewers were carefully fermenting signature, fruity, spicy Chouffe yeast to create the flavorful unique blonde ale we all love! You’ll enjoy the smooth drinkability, fruity aromas and flavors, and warming finish.

750 mL bottle, packaged 02/24/11, best by 02/2013. Pours a hazed golden with a white head. Yeasty bubble gum aroma, apple, spices. Flavor is apple, pear, cloves and bubble gum, grassiness. A very nice Belgian golden here, though it doesn’t tread any new ground.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Hazy light orange-brown body, thick puffy off-white head. Fruity, herbal nose with hints of banana and clove in addition to vinous light fruit characteristics (white grape), wet grass, and fennel. Delicate, sweet and spicy. Sweet, herbal, dusty body, grassy with flower nectar, candi sugar, bubblegum, clove, white wine, soapy/herbal hops, and a soft, herbal finish. Warming alcohol. A delicious, complex beer, fruity but not heavy or syrupy.

Bottle: Poured a hazy amber color ale with a super large off-white foamy head with good retention and some very good lacing. Aroma consists of sweet Belgian malt with light bready yeast notes and light fruity ester. Taste is also a mix between some semi0sweet Belgian malt with a bready yeast with light peppery notes and some light refreshing ester also noticeable. Body is quite full with great carbonation and very light alcohol noticeable. Another winner from breweries that don’t get it wrong very often.

A solid collaborative beer, and one that I wasnt too surprised about, Ommegang is the US’s Belgofile’s dream brewery, and although Brasserie d’Achouffe only brews a few beers, they make them very well. This was what I was expecting, a nice belgian strong ale with flavors and a palate reminiscent of a tripel, saison, and belgian strong pale combined. The two yeats however, made this pretty funky by the time the bottle was getting to the last few sips. A good beer, pretty expected, nothing too far outside of the box, but doesnt mean its not delicious.
