Sour Ale Aged in Oak Barrels

In January of 2009, a homebrewer and microbiologist named Al Buck won our Batch #50 homebrew contest with his incredibly complex gueuze-style ale. We knew this beer wouldn’t be easy to re-create, but the perfect layers of classic barnyard funk and lactic sourness were impossible to resist. Nearly 3 years later, after brewing the beer once in 2009 and a second batch in 2010, after adding various strains of wild yeasts and bacteria to the barrels and the bottles, after blending multiple batches back together and well beyond our release of Batch #300, we’re finally prepared to release Batch #50 – Grand Funk Aleroad. Brewed in the classic Belgian Gueuze tradition of barrel aging and blending multiple vintages of lambic-style ale, Batch #50 is one of the most rewarding beers we’ve ever had the opportunity to brew.

Bottle shared during Scopey’s 10k tasting - many thanks to the boy himself. Pours mostly clear gold with a bubbly white head. A touch of musty wood in the nose, rindy lemon, hay. Light sweet flavor with mellow acidity, wheat, hay, moist grass. Medium bodied with fine, spritzy carbonation. Moderate acidity on the finish, lemon squash, pale bread, light musty bite, grass. Solid offering.

Bottle share at my 10K tasting, acquired via trade. It pours very slightly hazy golden/pale orange with a tiny white head. The nose is soft, funky, floral, woody, hay, light dust, musty, light manure and vanilla. The taste is tart, light mouth-pucker, funky, sour grapefruit, pithy lemon, granny smith apple, funky, some sherbet and earth with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Quite mellow. Not a huge amount of depth, but rather enjoyable.

Bottle split at Scopey 10K, thanks to he of the ten, 26/11/15. Golden with a moderate off White covering that quickly dissipates to nyadda. Nose is pissy citrics, damp cloth, funk, lemon rind, traces of dry rot. Taste comprises funky vibes, pissy, wood must, lemon, tarte fruit load, decaying peach, lactic pangs. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with moderate puckerings. Solid enough geueze.

900e ratings!

thnx to a trade . Pours clear blonde, nearly no head . Smell is funky, bit grainy . Taste is dry , wood, sharp lactic sourness . Touch of grainyness . Some citrussy sourness as well . Not as complex as a real geuze, but not a bad ’American sour ale ’... Only wonder why they call this a geuze ...

Aroma is really fruity with lots of pineapple, mango, peach and apricot. Medium light barnyard funk with moderate lactic acidity and citrus. Pours a slightly cloudy, golden orange with a small, faint head that quickly disappears to the edge. No lacing and faint legs. Flavor has moderate acidity with lots of tropical fruit and stone fruit. Some kiwi and mango. Medium light citrus with nice, light yogurt character. Not much barnyard character. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, it could use a bit more earthy, barnyard funk. Nice fruit character. Balanced acidity and could use more carbonation.

Looks nice, a hazy golden, very minimal head. Nose is great! Lots of lemon, wet hay and other funk. slight sweetness with more and more citrus. Taste is nice but not great. Lots of hay and lemon...wheat body and some spiciness. It’s pretty good but truthfully, very one-sided taste, and not a great mouthfeel. Glad it’s not hugely sour.

Bottle. Pours a hazy yellow with thick frothy white head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is a strong funk, oak, and lemon zest. Thin mouthfeel with nice tart lemon, nice funk, lingering sourness. Crisp, easy to drink, very impressive.

Bottle with thanks to dbuckingham! Pours hazy golden with minimal head and basically no lacing. A lot of sediment in the bottom, so its possible to get a murky pour if that is your thing. Aroma is fruity, light tart lemon, oak, woody, some funk, musty basement, horse blanket. Medium body, basically flat. This is a pretty interesting beer.
