The Moinette Bio* is a top fermentation, blond beer with refermentation in the bottle. It was created in 1990 and is, together with the Saison Dupont Bio*, one of the first two organic* beers. The Moinette Bio* has the combination of malt aromas, fruitiness and fine hops. It is very thirst-quenchening and strikes a fine balance between mellowness, fruitiness and bitterness. The long refermentation in the bottle ends up in a very complex beer. The production is being controlled by Certisys and has the label Biogarantie®.

Sample from 250 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Blonde colour, large white head. Pleasant aroma and flavour with a certain "spiciness" from the yeast, hints of white kandij sugar, but not too sweet. Moderate hops.

Pours dark amber with a large fluffy head. Heavily carbonated. Aroma of malt. Tastes like a saison, lots of different influences on the tongue. Palate is very complex, dark notes of fruit, malt and yeast. High ABV leaves this beer tasting a bit like alcohol. Not incredible drinkable but it is well crafted.

At Uncle Babe's Burger Bar, Ghent. Shared with Anke.
Pours hazy ochre with a small, frothy, off-white head. The aroma contains bread, yeast, herbs & spices, banana, grain, some orange. It tastes medium bready bitter and light fruity sour; yeasty, dry, hoppy finish. Medium body, slick textrue, lively carbonation. I can see this is well-made but it's not really my style.

Had this a couple of years ago when it was still an alias of Moinette Biologique but the (very old school and otherwise AB InBev-dominated) drinks shop that commissions this, claims the recipe has been changed meanwhile, hence its separate entry here. Bottle from Oelegemse Drankendiscount, the commissioner, itself. Thick and frothy, quite large-bubbled, snow white head, slowly dissolving in the middle over a misty golden blonde beer with warmer peachy tinge - looks exactly the same as Moinette Biologique in any case. Aroma of ripe banana, apple peel, sweetbread, meringue, camomile flowers, green melon, pineapple, clove-like phenols, dry white bread, honey, hint of damp earth and some very vague DMS (stewed white cabbage) in the background but so subtle and volatile that for once it does not really disturb me. Estery, sweetish onset, banana isoamylacetate but not overdone, hints of pineapple and ripe pear, light sourish edge, medium carbonated. Fluffy, round, quite full mouthfeel, pleasantly bready with some lingering honeyish sweetness thinly on top; mild phenolic spiciness in the end, earthy breadiness (yeast), ongoing malt and fruit sweetishness and herbal, floral hop bitterishness. A vague hint at warming alcohol ensues but remains where it ought to be. Accessible, seemingly less complex than the average Dupont saison but - as I suspected - not very different from the regular Moinette Biologique, if anything it comes across as a bit sweeter and less hop bitter, but only a meticulous side by side tasting will be able to convince me that this is indeed a different recipe from Moinette Biologique...

Pours unclear blonde, medium white head. Smell is very intense, natural grainy, complex grainbill, funky, very hay-like. Taste is sharp, bit bitter, very aromatic grainbill. Mildly phenolic and esthers. Very balanced. Medium bitterness. Easy drinkin. Medium body and carbo. A simple belgian ale, but very well executed.

75 cl bottle, cork screw. Porter yellow color, hazed, big frothy white head. Smell is citrusy, hoppy, yeasty classic of the style. Aroma pale malts, citrusy hops, grains, earthy yeast, light sugary, grassy. Very earthy, spiced. Raw, earthy, crude yet refined, nice one.
