Dry-Hopped Sour Ale with Grapes

We’ve been friends with the folks at Smog City for many years and getting to brew a beer with them was a dream come true. Truly, only in the world of dreams could this remarkable beer have been manifested. A Belgian-style golden ale, brewed with Semillon and Viognier grapes plus three types of hops, fermented with Brettanomyces Trois as well as our house yeast strain, then blended with a sour blonde ale and finally dry-hopped with Amarillo hops.

Thanks to TimE for sharing the bottle! Poured into a teku showing deep dense dark apricot with sparse white foam. The nose shows a lot of deep brett notes with a typical Viognier profile showing peaches. The palate is light bodied and moderately carbonated. Moderately tart profile with flavors of dry white wine and a white wine bitterness.

Hazy light golden color. Very nice light oaky nose with excellent grape musk - the viognier shines nicely. Lightly sour mouth with lots of oak and grape musk. Nice fairly carbonated mouth. Light for 9.5%. Not hugely sour but actually pretty damn good stuff. If you are expecting a hardcore sour this will disappoint you.

Bottle shared at the chriso Easter 2015 tasting - London. Big cheers to Mitchy for this sour! Pours hazy gold with a thick, creamy white head. The aroma has some light citrus, pale bread, lemon and straw. Medium sweet flavor with relaxed brett, light citrusy hops, oily pine needles, white bread. Light to medium bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Clean finish, lightly warming, with some citrus fruit zest and light acidity. Very nice.(April 2015, score 3.7)

Bottle shared at the chriso and Ruth pre GBBF Shindig 2016 - London. Day 1. Pours cloudy gold with a frothy, white head. Tangy citrus abounds, some peach, moderate sweetness, alcohol, light rind. Medium bodied with average carbonation. OK stuff on the whole. (August 2016, score: 3.5)

This beer is yellow orange in color and quite cloudy. Medium-sized white head. Looks a bit fizzy but holds up pretty well. The aroma is citrus and grapes with a fair bit of lactic acid character. Sweet orange/grapefruit/lime juice. Some floral sweetness. Less malt character than expected. Alcohol is well hidden. I really expected more booze in this one. Fairly tart. Lots of fruit. Grapes, tangerines, oranges, lime peel. Mild oak. The blend of sour and sweet flavors is very nice. Really shows off the blend of the two component beers well. Medium body. A lot easier to drink than expected. Interesting and tasty.

Bottle at ChrisO. Many Thanks Ken! It pours hazy dirty gold with a medium white head. The nose is soft, juicy, earthy, orange, brioche, sherbet, funk, oak and vanilla. The taste is crisp, funky, wood, floral, barnyard, orange sherbet, vinous, white grape and gooseberry with a dry finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Juicy and funky. Lacks the classic acidity of brewery sour/wilds (which is probably a good thing in this case). Very nice indeed.
