A Silent Pursuit is the first Munichwine to be bottled/released, ever. Munichwine is a new sub-style of barleywine that I have created quietly at Private Press throughout the pandemic. The genesis of this new beer style is rooted in my admiration for both barleywine and Munich malt. A Silent Pursuit was Aged in both bourbon and California grape brandy barrels, and reminds me of spirit-soaked bread pudding, topped with toasted nuts, flambéed bananas, and covered in a date caramel sauce.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle. Aroma is super malt forward with lots of raisin, prune and cherry fruit notes. Lots of toasted bread, graham crackers, darker caramel, toffee and Tootsie rolls. Medium light alcohol notes with light bourbon character and hints of oak. Pours a dark, muddy, brown color with a small, mocha head that recedes quickly to the edges where it lingers. No lacing and long legs. Flavor is rather sweet with loads of toffee, toasted bread, graham crackers, dark caramel and Tootsie rolls. Medium bitterness and medium light alcohol notes. Lots of cherry, raisin, date and prune notes. Light oak and bourbon notes. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a solid munichwine. Lots of fruity malt notes with great toasted grain character. Solid bourbon barrel notes that compliment nicely. Easy drinking considering the abv.

Medium brown, no head, flat. Boozy up front, has a nice charred raisin note, some fruitiness, a bit of sweetness but not as complex as I'd like for this investment in liver capacity.

500ml bottle. Feels more like a barrel aged doppelbock. Sweet, malty and earthy with some bourbon heat, oak and brandy notes, some prunes and raisin

Bottle at Black Christmas March 2022
Dark amber colour, hazy, dull. Medium malt depth, but more fruity than most Barley Wines, moderately sweet, some alcohol smell. Not very complex, but pleasant.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle. Aroma is malt forward with lots of caramel, toffee, toasted bread and biscuit, and honey notes. Light cherry, raisin and date notes. Medium light alcohol notes and hints of oak. Pours a fairly dark brown with lighter brown hues on the edges and a medium sized, medium thick, tan head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers in clumps before disappearing. Faint lacing and long legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with lots of caramel, toffee, toasted bread and biscuit. Lighter notes of honey, nuts, cherries, dates and raisins. Medium bitterness and medium light alcohol notes. Hints of oak. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a solidly unique take on a barleywine. The malt profile has characteristics that I would expect from a more aged barleywine, but the Munich malt got there faster. Balanced alcohol notes and sweetness. Just enough bitterness to be noticeable and cut the sweetness a bit.
