Rich creamy head with bouquet of Wheat malt, black currant, clove, and apple. Deep full flavors of caramel and chocolate malt balance with hops for a smooth warming character. Smooth malt leads to a subtle alcohol and dark caramel finish.
The wonderful balance of this beer provides a complex profile hiding the 9.5% alcohol content. The perfect companion for a cold winter night.

Notes from May 2009 Starting the night off in the completely wrong direction... (I'll save those pale ales to rinse after brushing my teeth). Half growler from New Beer, poured into my favorite Ommegang anniversary glass. Stiff pop off the cap, this one is about a month old. Beautiful brown sugar rise off an eight ounce pour. Nice staying power over a black coffee body, lined with deep amber highlights. Smells of licorice & earthy blackberries upfront giving a brief acidity, building on cola & anise. The expected banana is disappointingly, a little Runt-y. It trails back on soft honey wheat. Taste first off is bitter/tart cherries, definitely. I almost have that numbing sensation I always get from the heavy pesticides. The beer is acidic & sharp constantly through, or maybe it's just the alcohol being that well hidden. Cola & milk chocolate that's just too sweet & velvety to be dark. The body is so milky, yet so carbonated. Black grape skins reminiscent on the texture. A little insertion of coffee that I'm not sure of, whether oxidation or roast, it's the only thing here I think isn't in it's right spot. Insignificant anyways. Finish is a Fig Newton kind of combo of fruit & caked malt. Expectations were high, & I stuffed my bag with growlers(of course), but fuck me if I just pass up their great Winter Wheat from now on with a snobbish meh & just pester for this throughout the year.

12 ounce bottle. Dark brown color. Small creamy beige head. Rich, sweet roasted malt nose. Notes of caramel and dark dried fruits. Bittersweet dark wheat malty notes. Clove, plum, raisins, chocolate, earthy, yeasty funk and sweet onion jam. Complex and flavorful with hearty wheat notes. Very good.

From Jan 2007

This one pours from 12oz bottle(room temp, best by Sept) a rich and thick looking very dark brown with a very small head of foam that disappeared almost immediately. Still, there's some lacing when I tilt my glass.

The smell is complex. I note wheat, dark fruit, clove, banana and more.

The taste on first sip is very clovey with big hits of wheat and plum. As I swish the brew in my mouth, I'm getting good banana and more of the plum and clove and they're all working so well together with the finish being on the dry side.. And... where the heck is the 9.5%abv?? I hardly notice any warming as it goes down and I find that almost unreal!

I'm on the last third of my glass now and the tastes just seem to get better and better as this liquid nectar warms up even more from the body heat transmitted from my hand to the glass. Wow, just wow.

As I take my last sip, I notice just the tiniest bit of sediment in my New Belgium goblet but more importantly, I realize that I've just had a thoroughbly enjoyable drinking session with one, fine American Weizenbock!

Bottom line: This is, imho, a world class brew and a *must* try if you see it in your area. Me? I got my sample from my buddy in NYC, nutbrown. Thanks a bunch!!!

Bottle shared at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Dark brown to black with a tan head. Aroma is sourish, fruity, with olives and some roast. Sourish flavor, somewhat roasty, with fruits and light spiciness. Medium-bodied. Seems unintentionally infected, but quite pleasant this way.
