Named for a retired California Western Railroad steam engine on the Fort Bragg to Willits run through the Redwoods, Old No. 38 Stout is a smooth, firm-bodied stout with the toasted character and coffee notes of dark malts and roasted barley.

Bottle. Very dark brown with fading light tan head. Toasty aroma with dark toffee, nuts, mocha, hints of dark berries. Fairly light bodied with some carbonation. Fairly dry taste with coffee, modestly sweet chocolate and nuts. Mild roasted note. No astringency from the coffee. Long dry finish has some salt.

Appearance: Back with a nice tan head and some good lacing
Aroma: Not much, roasted malts
Taste: Thin mouthfeel. Roasted malts and chocolate
Ok, but nothing special. Left half a pint on the table when l left. I’ll look for this in bottles so I can re-rate it, my experience doesn’t come close to other ratings.

Aroma of roasted malts and rich chocolate. Flavors of roasted malts, molasses, grainy, chocolate and bitter. I’m not changing my rating. I still didn’t like this beer.

Bottle. Opaque dark brown, creamy golden brown head. Chocolate and roast aroma, light blueberries. Medium body, velvetty mouthfeel, with fine prickly carbonation. Good mellow roastyness, a few honyed almonds, smooth exit

bottle pours black with a medium light brown head. Aroma is roasty with coal and worn leather notes. Mouth is full bodied but there is a good bit of carbonation cleaning the palate in the finish. This is big and black through and through. Roasted malt, bitter cocoa, burnt sugar or caramel, minimal sweetness, but I like it. Noticeable grassy hops in the finish. Overall, a very well done stout.

Tap at Pony Bar. All the standard characteristics of a dry stout, but all above average. Like a Guinness but with sweeter and with more depth of character. Definitely a sessioner.

An ok stout without much body and somewhat lacking in the taste department. This beer is dark but rather transparent for a stout. The smell is mostly roasted malt, chocolatey malt. There is even an interesting hop character in the background. The taste is similar but the feel is so light that it kind of washes out the beer’s potential. I guess it’s fairly drinkable, but it wouldn’t be my choice for a stout. It’s not bad, and if you like light stouts, it’s probably a good choice. It’s just not my thing.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm) Dark brown colour, almost black, with frothy pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, cocoa and gentle milky coffee hints. Malty, roasted taste with chocolate, coffee and a slightly roasted, gentle bitterness in a dry finish. Medium body, smooth and well rounded. Once upon a time this was one of the beers that got me in to the American craft beer scene. It’s still a tasty and well balanced beer, but it seems my frames of reference has moved on a bit.
